Someone needs money and you lend him money. It's good to help others if they are helpless. You can give money as a charity. But what do you expect when you lend money to someone?

You expect that you will get the money back in the future. For example, you lend $3000 to someone and you get it back after 3 there. $3000  dollars is worth less than it was 3 years ago. So you lose money even if you get the exact same amount after 3 years. Now if you lend money to make money, and you are getting less than the inflation rate, again you lose money. In order to make money, you need to get at least more than the inflation rate.
