There was darkness, but strangely in that twilight, a drop could be heard falling. But upon falling, the humidity and coldness that the drop carried could also be felt. Suddenly, unexpectedly, a child woke up and found a flashlight shining on his face.

"We don't have to go, son. There's not much time. The river is going to overflow due to the rain. We're leaving," said the child's mother.

The child was very absent-minded. The first thing he did was put his hands under the pillow in search of his most precious treasures.

"There's no time, hurry up!" said his mother, forcefully pulling him out of bed.

"Mama, mama, let me take my toys," cried the child.

Both of them left the room and headed towards the rooftops. Darkness was present. Nevertheless, they arrived unharmed at the edge of the house. The only thing the child could hear were the screams of people as if there was a crowd gathered in their house, but he couldn't see them.

"Where is my father?" said the child's father.

"I think he's in the living room," heard the voice of his aunt.

"Doesn't he plan on escaping?" said the child's grandmother.

"He refuses to leave the house," said his aunt's husband.

Since the child had woken up, a rumbling could be heard around the house. It was like the sound of rocks racing at high speed, but colliding forcefully against something. There was another sound that also prevailed, the argument between his father and grandfather, and the women's screams.

"We're leaving here!" said the child's father finally.

The child doesn't remember that part well. They must have climbed the rooftops. It was as if darkness and time swallowed everything in the child's memory. The next thing he remembers is finding himself in a house, high up in the mountains.

The screams of death reached that place, as well as the sound of rocks rolling at high speed. The rain also had its orchestra that mixed with all the sounds. There, in that house high up in the mountains, the child couldn't sleep anymore. He held tightly onto two toys he had brought with him, never taking his eyes off the few illuminated streets below.

The child could barely hear his parents murmuring to each other. He knew they had left his aunt, grandparents, and cousins behind. His siblings and parents were there with the neighbors. Nevertheless, he felt alone.

That was the day the river reclaimed its territory once again.

The child remembered little of that. Perhaps his mind blocked it and omitted those memories. Although his parents years later said they saw hands emerging from the ground like plants, crossing the town square, for him, such a timeframe never existed. What the child would never forget though, was seeing the sky filled with helicopters, resembling mosquitoes. However, he only kept the image, as it was like a silent film strip to him. He could imagine them, but it wouldn't be the same.

He would also never forget that he would carry his two toys with him into adulthood. Nor the part of that night of darkness and rain that left them without a home and toys. That event would bring about a great change in the child's life.

Hay oscuridad, pero extrañamente en esa penumbra se escuchaba una gota caer. Pero al caer, también se sentía la humedad y frialdad que cargaba esa gota. De repente, sin esperárselo, un niño despertó y se encontró con una linterna enfocando su rostro.

—No tenemos que ir, hijo. No hay mucho tiempo. El río se va a desbordar por las lluvias. Nos vamos — dijo la madre del niño.

El niño era muy despistado. Lo primero que hizo fue meter las manos debajo de la almohada buscando sus más preciados tesoros.

—¡No hay tiempo, apresúrate! — dijo su madre, parándolo violentamente de su cama.

—Mamá, mamá, déjame llevarme mis juguetes — lloraba el niño.

Ambos salieron de la habitación hacia los tejados. La oscuridad estaba presente. Aun así, ellos llegaron ilesos al último de la casa. El niño lo único que escuchaba eran los gritos de las personas, como si hubiera una multitud reunida en su casa, pero no lograba verlos.

—¿Dónde está mi papá? — decía el padre del niño.

—Creo que está en la sala — escuchó la voz de la tía.

—¿Acaso no piensa escapar? — decía la abuela del niño.

—Se niega a abandonar la casa — dijo el esposo de la tía del niño.

Desde que el niño se había despertado, un estruendo se escuchaba alrededor de la casa. Era como el correr de las rocas a alta velocidad, pero chocando a enorme velocidad contra algo. Había otro sonido que también prevalecía y era la discusión de su padre con su abuelo y el grito de las mujeres.

—¡Nos vamos de aquí! — dijo por fin el padre del niño.

Esa parte no se acuerda bien el niño. Treparon los tejados, tuvieron que haberlo hecho. Fue como si la oscuridad y el tiempo se tragaran todo en la memoria del niño. Lo siguiente que recuerda es encontrarse en una casa, en la parte alta de la montaña.

Los gritos de la muerte llegaban hasta ese lugar, así como el de las piedras rodar a toda velocidad. La lluvia también tenía su orquesta que se mezclaba con todos los sonidos. Ahí, en esa casa en lo alto de la montaña, el niño no podía volver a dormir. Apretaba con fuerza dos juguetes que había traído consigo, sin apartar la vista de las pocas calles que quedaban iluminadas abajo.

El niño apenas podía oír el murmullo de sus padres. Sabía que habían dejado atrás a su tía, sus abuelos y sus primas. Estaban ahí sus hermanos y sus padres con los vecinos. Aun así, se sentía solo.

Ese fue el día que el río reclamó sus terrenos de nuevo.

Poca cosa recordó el niño de aquello. Quizás su mente lo bloqueó y omitió esos recuerdos. Aunque sus padres años después dijeron ver cruzar la plaza del pueblo y ver manos sobresaliendo de la tierra como si fueran plantas, para él nunca existió tal tramo de tiempo. Lo que sí el niño nunca olvidaría sería ver el cielo poblado de helicópteros, similares a mosquitos, pero solo se quedó con la imagen, porque para él es una cinta de película sin sonido alguno. Podría imaginárselos, pero no sería lo mismo.

Tampoco olvidaría que cargaría hasta la adultez con sus dos juguetes que se trajo. Ni parte de esa noche de oscuridad y lluvia que los dejó sin hogar y sin juguetes. Aquel suceso traería un gran cambio a la vida del niño.
