Today I want to share the experience of a couple of nights ago, when one of the largest pipes in the city where I live suddenly burst, flooding our building and destroying almost the entire street. Hoy quiero compartir la experiencia de hace un par de noches atrás, cuando una de las tuberías más grandes de la ciudad en donde vivo repentinamente se reventó, inundando nuestro edificio y destruyendo casi toda la calle. La calle frente a la entrada del edificio. </sup> </center> --- **[ENG]** It was 2 in the morning and I was in my room doing things on the computer, out of nowhere a very loud noise began to sound like it was raining, but when I opened the curtain and looked out, no water was falling, right away I knew something was wrong. I quickly went to the balcony window and when I looked down I was impressed to see a gigantic amount of water with mud and stones coming down from the parking ramp, I woke up my family, and told them to put their clothes on quickly in case there was to emergency exit. --- >**[ESP]** Eran las 2 de la mañana y yo estaba en mi cuarto haciendo cosas en la computadora, de la nada comenzó a sonar un ruido muy fuerte como si estuviera lloviendo, pero cuando abrí la cortina y me asomé, no estaba cayendo nada de agua, enseguida supe que ocurría algo. Fui rápidamente a la ventana del balcón y cuando vi hacia abajo me impresione al ver una cantidad gigantesca de agua con lodo y piedras que bajaba desde la rampa del estacionamiento, desperté a mi familia, y les dije que se pusieran ropa rápido por si había que salir de emergencia.  <center> <sup> Own photograph. Vista hacia los sótanos 2 y 3. </sup> </center> --- **[ENG]** From our balcony you can't see the side of the street where the pipe is, so I couldn't imagine where the water was coming from, I hurried out of the apartment to see what was happening and I could hear water falling through the elevator shafts, then I understood which is because it entered from the ground floor into the basements. I started up, hoping to find someone who had a view towards that side of the street, then someone opened the door, Andrea (the super model of the building) and she explained to me that the street and the pipe in front had burst, that it was necessary to call the fire department as quickly as possible. So I went back to the apartment, looked up the numbers on the Internet and started calling. The firefighters were the first to answer my call, but they told me that they are not in charge of that, that I should call Hidrocapital (a Venezuelan government company in charge of supplying water to the country) What the firefighter did ask me was if there was any person who could present physical damage, to which I honestly replied that I did not know. --- >**[ESP]** Desde nuestro balcón no se ve el lado de la calle donde esta la tubería, así que no podía imaginarme de donde venía el agua, salí de prisa del apartamento para ver que sucedía y se escuchaba agua cayendo por los huecos de los ascensores, luego entendí que es porque entraba desde la planta baja hacia los sótanos. Comencé a subir, esperaba encontrar a alguien que tuviese vista hacia ese lado de la calle, entonces alguien abrió la puerta, Andrea (la súper modelo del edificio) y me explico que se había reventado la calle y la tubería de enfrente, que había que llamar a los bomberos lo más rápido posible. Entonces volví al apartamento, busqué los números en Internet y comencé a llamar. Los bomberos fueron los primeros en contestarme, pero me dijeron que ellos no son los encargados de eso, que debía llamar a Hidrocapital (Compañía gubernamental venezolana encargada de surtir agua al país), lo que si me preguntó el bombero fue si había alguna persona que pudiera presentar daños físicos, a lo que yo le respondí con honestidad que no sabía.  <center> <sup> Own photograph. Vista hacia los sótanos1, 2 y 3. </sup> </center> --- **[ENG]** I took the photographs a couple of hours after the event began, with my brother's camera, Canon PowerShot SX 150 IS model, the neighbors of my floor are good friends and they allowed me to go in to see what was happening, luckily the camera had charged batteries. --- >**[ESP]** Las fotografías las realicé un par de horas después de haber comenzado el suceso, con la cámara de mi hermano, modelo Canon PowerShot SX 150 IS, los vecinos de mi piso son buenos amigos y me permitieron entrar a ver bien lo que sucedía, por suerte la cámara tenía las pilas cargadas.  <center> <sup> Own photograph. Vista hacia la entrada. </sup> </center> --- **[ENG]** The first half hour since the fugue started was the most tense, because the amount of water that came out of the pipe sounded quite loud and at one point all the basements were flooded, in addition almost all the neighbors were asleep and the situation altered them a lot . However, then water continued to come out, almost until 6 in the morning, but it was not the same amount, it was much less. --- >**[ESP]** La primera media hora desde que comenzó la fuga fue la más tensa, porque la cantidad de agua que salía por la tubería sonaba bastante fuerte y en un momento se inundaron todos los sótanos, además casi todos los vecinos estaban dormidos y la situación los alteró mucho. Sin embargo, luego siguió saliendo agua, casi hasta las 6 de la mañana, pero no era la misma cantidad, era mucho menos.  <center> <sup> Own photograph. Basement 1. Fotografía propia. Sotano 1. </sup> </center> --- **[ENG]** There is no need to worry anymore, neither the community nor the cars were damaged, the biggest drawback was the amount of mud that entered the parking lots, now everything is covered by a layer of earth, but the people in the buildings, along with a team cleaning agents sent by the mayor's office, they do a good job of helping to restore the image of the residence. --- >**[ESP]** Ya no hay de que preocuparse, ni la comunidad ni los automóviles resultaron dañados, el mayor inconveniente fue la cantidad de barro que entró a los estacionamientos, ahora todo está cubierto por una capa de tierra, pero las personas del edificios, junto con un equipo de limpieza que envió la alcaldía, hacen un buen trabajo aportando restableciendo la imagen de la residencia.  <center> <sup> Own photograph. Sotano 2. </sup> </center> --- **[ENG]** These situations reveal to us who we are and the way we react, I like to see that I am part of a community that is united in important moments like this, where many were present with the will to help. --- >**[ESP]** Estas situaciones nos descubre quienes somos y la manera en que reaccionamos, me gusta ver que formo parte de una comunidad que es unida en momentos importantes como este, donde muchos se hicieron presente con voluntad de ayudar.  <center> <sup> Own photograph. Planta baja. </sup> </center> --- **[ENG]** This is not just another isolated event, in San Antonio de los Altos there is a lot of significant damage to roads and public spaces caused by pipe breaks. The government does not have the resources to fix these situations, many times the communities have to make funds to pay for the repairs, that will probably be what happens in this case, since the elevators, among other things, were quite affected. --- >**[ESP]** Este no es tan solo otro suceso aislado, en San Antonio de los Altos hay muchos daños importantes a carreteras y espacios públicos causados por rompimientos de tuberías. El gobierno no tiene los recursos para arreglar estas situaciones, muchas veces las comunidades deben realizar fondos para poder costear las reparaciones, eso será probablemente lo que suceda en este caso, ya que los ascensores , entre otras cosas, fueron bastante afectados.  <center> <sup> Own photograph. By that time there were enough neighbors sweeping up and trying to help, probably none of them would have slept all night. --- >**[ESP]** Estas últimas fotos las tomé a las 7 de la mañana cuando salí a ver los daños. Mis pies en el barro de la entrada. </sup> </center> --- **[ENG]** I think we have to try to see the positive side of the situations, and I think that in this case, although it was a scare and will involve some costs, it was also an opportunity to see the community united for a cause. These times of quarantine we can feel very isolated, perhaps we do not have to wait for these kinds of events to occur to unite. --- >**[ESP]** Creo que hay que intentar ver el lado positivo de las situaciones, y creo que en este caso, aunque fue un susto e implicará algunos costos, fue también una oportunidad para ver a la comunidad unida por una causa. Estos tiempos de cuarentena podemos sentirnos muy aislados, quizás no haya que esperar a que ocurran esta clase de eventos para unirnos.  <center> <sup> Own photograph.
