He used to go to the classroom every day. He would be in class for his lectures, and when there were no lectures, he would stay there to study. I used to be amazed by him. He was a chemistry student simultaneously taking a full-time program with another higher institution in town, although his classes were during the weekends.

I usually wondered how he managed his time and how he coupled studying two programs at the same time. Until one fateful day, when I went to read in the classroom in the evening, I saw him. He sat at a single desk with his hands on the table as if glued there. He had headphones on with loud music, while his full attention was on his books. He paid no attention to what came in or out of the class, or who was talking behind or in front of him, nor did he pay attention to their discussions. The attention he gave to his books was what I envied about him.

I couldn't even read that day but imagined how he could have such focus. I tapped on his shoulder several times before his attention returned to the room. I asked him how he paid complete attention to his studies, not minding the activities around him, and having his hands down on the chair as if glued there. He responded that while growing up, he didn’t have much interest in studying. What his father did then was to “glue him to the table” and give him a book to read, and he wouldn’t be let go until he finished reading it. This made him used to that position, making him unable to sit otherwise while reading and also helped him to give strong concentration to his studies. He came out well in both programs, having excellent results.
