Bed Side Table Upcycle: Of COURSE There's a Mushroom Theme!
Okay I have a confession to make. I don't know the difference between the DIY communities on HIVE. There seems to be a few, so I post in different ones to share the love around. Which one do you post to and why?

As you may know we have tennants coming in a month. As the place will be furnished, I wanted to give them more storage space as we don't have any built in cupboards and the place isn't that big. One way to do that is with bedside tables. I'd picked up these large ones from marketplace for $20 and they'd been sitting in the shed, but they aren't my style. A freshen up was in order! I'd already bought the gorgeous handles from Kmart - what I needed was to clean and paint them.

The awful thing was is that they smelt! I don't know what the smell was - it wasn't quite musty, but maybe that was it - must and mould, though I couldn't see any? I hope my efforts have helped to get rid of the worst of it, and that the paint helps mask it too. Does anyone know what it could be?

Firstly I had to sand the top right back as well as the side and the tops. As I didn't want to spend ages sanding the fiddly bits and planned to paint it all white, it only took an hour or two to do one cupboard. I gave it a good spray with vinegar blended with a mix of essential oils, rubbed it down, and sat it to dry in the hot sun.

Then it was painting time! I would never normally paint the inside or the drawer insides, but as the wood smelt, I thought it was a good idea. I had some cheap white mineral paint from Kmart, so gave two coats to the inside and one to the inside of the cupboard. After that, I used Fusion mineral paint which has a built in primer and top coat. It sticks so well and you only need a rough sand. After two hours, I gave it another coat, left it for a day and gave it a final coat. The top was whitewashed to take away the yellow look of the pine, and then had three coats of a water based polyurethane.

I had some wall paper left over from another project - two different sorts. Of course, if you know me at all you'd know that I used the mushroom wallpaper in the top drawer - there was only enough to do one lining for each cupboard, so the rest was the jungle one, which I love - especially the treeferns.

Now, I also gave the inside of the cupboard and drawers (before lining them) a liberal spray of an essential oil mix blended with vinegar. I partly chose them for their antibacterial and antimicrobial properties, but also for their scent, mixing a heavy earthy base note of cedar and cloves with headier lemon, lime and tea tree oil, and a little orange. It seemed to work well - so far I can't smell anything but I'm worried the smell might leach through.

I suppose it doesn't matter much - I've learnt a lot on this project and really it only took me two mornings of work. Once you have done a few you can cut corners and be pretty efficient! I absolutely love the way they look, to be honest - what do you think?
