The Long and Scary Way to See the Tallest Single Drop Falls in Tasmania, Montezuma Falls
'Let me out of the car' I scream as we face a wall and a mud pit we are bound to scrape the side of the Defender on. It won't be the first time I will choose to leap out and take photos over going through some terrifying 4WD hazard on this two and a half hour track to Montezuma falls, graded high difficulty by Parks Tasmania.

We were scared before we left, but really wanted to KNOW. Having skipped the notorious Climies track we had fomo, and Levi and Mark, the Landrover drivers we had met earlier, we thought a convoy of three guided by a calm and experienced 4WDer, would be a good start. We could always turn back, right? In retrospect, we should have read the stickers on Levi's car more closely.

Levi ahead was from French Guana and said, in his thick French accent, "watch out for the sword of Damacles' to warn us. What, we thought? Then we saw a huge stick dangling vertical from the trees. An Australian would have said 'watch out for the big fucking stick'. But we loved his calm and capable direction.

The track to the falls starts quite nicely, and quickly gets muddy and tricky. We never knew what might cause us to smash our fuel tank or get us stuck. But damn it was beautiful - large trees, mysterious cuttings, ferns. No one else on the track....

There were a lot of obstacles to overcome - low hanging branches and fallen trees, potholes, rocks, hills, river and creek crossings.

One was particularly scary as we couldn't get up it, as one of the tyres had lost air - mud over all terrain tyres may have done better. We had to be double winched up the hill and the boys changed the tyre whilst the girls made tea.

Honestly it was the best tea I ever have drunk. I sorely needed it as I was having an anxiety attack - we both were, expecting the worst!! Later, Levi would point to his car sticker and say 'but did you die?' and we would laugh, but on the track we were kinda white.

Partly, I'd say we were anxious because Jamie had only finished building the Defender and was still getting used to it, and partly as we had never done such a brutal track before. Levi wanted to take an alternative route back but we looked white so they agreed to take us back down. We didn't even feel comfortable going back down on our own!!

The falls were beautiful of course. My anxiety wasn't helped by having to cross a suspension bridge though! You can walk into see it.. it's only five km!!

The drive back down was far easier and we calmed down by the time we got to the bottom. If you want to see a short video check out our Instagram @roving_tracks!! As one of the crew said, by the time we get back to camp, we will want to do it again. That was kinda half way true. We did learn a lot though and were glad we went.

That night we camped at Rosebury Lake, but more on that in the next post! Oh, and we would also catch fish, go on the most hardcore walk, swim in a wild river and .. and... But that's all for later.

If I'm not getting to your posts, pleas understand it's difficult on the road with very patchy reception. I promise to visit each and every person that comments and engages when I get back to
