Her faded green bungalow stood at the very end of the street. A very private person, not much was known about Mrs. Agatha since she moved into the neighborhood, two years ago.

But everyone knew that most evenings, the clinking of chess pieces from her veranda could be heard as she played. Then Marvin came along. A lanky boy with restless feet and anger in his fists. A twelve-year-old who was known for playing pranks and skipping school. He was a thorn in the flesh of his parents and everyone around him, and was the kind of child who prances around as if he owned life itself. 


His first time in her veranda was when he flew her fence, chasing a punctured football, which bounced into her compound.

"You are trespassing," she said.

The boy gave her a sulky look and opened his mouth as if to mutter something...then changed his mind.

"But since you are here," she continued and waved at the chess board, "Do you know how to play?"

He shrugged, seemingly uninterested. "Just a little."

"Then sit," she said. "You'll play black."

The boy didn't like being given orders but he loved challenges, so he dropped his football and sat on the seat offered him.

That was the beginning of beginnings.

At first, they played, without talking much. Then, little by little, she began to share her life stories between moves. Stories about her championships, about her late husband who was her fiercest rival and best friend, and then about her daughter who lived in Canada but called every Sunday. Lastly she spoke about her illness - not with pity or any drama.

"Everyone thinks it’s the end that counts," she told him once, while he struggled to make sense of her style of speaking. "What counts more is what you do before the end." 

Marvin was changing. 

He stopped skipping school, he began turning in assignments. He began shouting less at home. On her porch he began to win, once, then twice. Every time he lost, he leaned forward and asked why, so eager to learn. 

One day she handed him a worn-out notebook. Inside were notes on her secret strategies, tournament results and sketches of boards of games played in the past. 

"This is yours now," she said.

Marvin held it tightly, like it was a medal. "Are you sure?" 

She smiled. "What's knowledge if it dies with me?" 

He was overwhelmed and didn't know what to say, so he said nothing. He played his best game that day - and lost by a single pawn.



Weeks went by, she became more feeble, Her fingers, once so sure, now trembled greatly as she moved her queen, but she still played.

On one calm sunday, she didn’t come out at all. Marvin waited outside for about an hour, and when the nurse finally came out, she said softly, “She’s resting today.” 


The next day she came out, but in a wheelchair, Oxygen tank by her side. She was looking so pale and her voice was barely above a whisper, but her eyes sparkled when they rested on him.

“You have a tournament next month, yes?”

“Yes.” He nodded to her. “Juvenile Chess Championship.”

“Good,” she whispered. Always "play with your head, but win with your heart.”


He nodded as he watched her move. He could tell she was in a lot of pains and he felt so bad that he couldn't be of any help, to this woman with the beautiful soul.

The day of the championship, Marvin wore the only white shirt he owned, which he had pressed neatly, and carried the notebook in his bag, along with a well-worn black knight he took from her set one evening, his lucky piece.

She wasn’t there.

He looked out into the crowd after every round. Nothing.

Still, he won. First match. Second. Quarter finals. Semi finals. 

In the last round, he faced a boy in a very smart uniform, flanked by coaches and classmates; Marvin had no one, except the voice in his head.

He felt her right there with him. 

He played like her.

And he won!

Two days later, he returned to her bungalow, medal in his pocket.

Her chair was empty.

The nurse was at the gate.

"She passed in her sleep. Peacefully. On the night of the finals."

Marvin stared at the veranda. The board was gone. The still air added to his melancholy.

"She left something for you," the nurse said as she handed him an envelope.

Inside was a note, written in wobbly cursive.
