God is always present but most times we are completely unaware of it. If we feel far away from Him, it is because we moved, definitely not God, because nothing can separate us from the Love of this awesome God.

>Where can I go from your Spirit?
Where can I flee from your presence?
If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.
If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
if I settle on the far side of the sea,
even there your hand will guide me,
your right hand will hold me fast

(Psalm 139:7-10. NIV).

But Sin and guilt can alienate us from God, just like in the case of Adam and Eve who hid from God's presence because they disobeyed the command given to them by God, in the Garden Of Eden.
Sometimes too, we are so busy, preoccupied with life as it were, that we do not have the time for Him. 
When trials and temptations come, and we feel that God has abandoned us so much that we get into depression and start having doubts concerning His power or his presence. It is times like this, times that we should hold fast unto His promises in the scriptures and know that He's an ever present help in trouble, He is our refuge and strength.
