Hello, my name is SoundBlossom and I'm a record addict.

As I previously mentioned in my <ins>introduction post</ins> I am, besides my visual research, also infected with 'the anger' to collect vinyl. To be honest, I have to admit that steem user <ins>@c082832</ins> gave me the idea to write a piece about my record collection. He introduced himself via his record collection and we talked about how a record collection can tell a life story...
So when you read this <ins>@c082832</ins> , I would like to thank you for the inspiration!

My grandparents, uncle and aunt, on mother's side, all worked in the Opera of Flanders. My grandfather was ' first bas singer', my uncle played a part and later he became stage manager and provided the make up. My mother sang in the choir as a child, and so on. Only to say that I am brought up with a lot of music.

Music has always been a big outlet for me. For every state of being there's an appropriate piece of music that fits the mood. Music is the strongest expression of all art forms. It goes straight from the ear to the brain. It had a direct highway to the mind and heart. Therefore it has the power to strengthen a feel, offer comfort, inspires, motivates, and so on.
My collection started with a legacy, of circa 150 records, of my mother. That gift contains mostly classical, opera, chansons (french songs), soul and singer songwriter of those days. I think I was twelve years old and felt very rich. But I never could imagine this was also the very beginning of a lifetime passion. I was motivated to buy more plates, so I did some small chores to have some pocket money. Little by little, with small baby steps, my collection grew.

At the transition from LP's to CD's I got massive donations from people who replaced their record collection by digital media. Suddenly there were records who were 'standing in the way', so they gave them away for nothing. It's was an enormous boost ...

MUSIC IS MUSIC TO ME

Now, thirty years later, I estimate my collection between 3500 and 4000 LP's, 12-inches and EP's.
In my record corner you will find very different genres; Classical, modern classical, jazz and blues, psychedelic rock, soundtracks and spoken word, soul, funk and P-funk, rap, trip-hop, blunted jazz, turntablism, intelligent rhymes, dub, reggae, dancehall, some punk and heavy metal, downtempo electronica, 4/4 dance, dubstep, grime, garage, breakbeat, broken beat, acid, ambient, noise, ... There are not many music styles that can't captivate me. With exception of country, new wave and the '80 sound. The last two had often to do with the sound of the analog synthesizer, which was massively deployed but actually still in its infancy. The sound of the synth is so not me, because it's too cold, nasal en tinny.
Essentially I have never been engaged in specific styles. I'm generally interested in 'sound' and that transcends every 'boxes of genres.' So, no pigeonholing for me! I discover new music with my ears and gut feeling and they don't make any divisions into genres. So if it's good it's good... Music is music to me!

AN ADDICTION LIKE NO OTHER.

It is true, an addiction like this is very expensive. And honestly, the little spare money I have, mostly goes to vinyl. I see it as an investment and legacy for my children. In which I wish to give more than just some spared money. Even, in the worst case, when they're not interested in having or collecting records. They can sell it (Rather not, but if it would turn out that way I also accept that) and have a nice sum left.
Because vinyl continues to rise in value. Especially now, with the record revival of the last few years.

But it is not only buying and collecting as many records. It is the search for those items that add value to your collection. The untold sense of spending hours and hours in record stores to dig in bakes. The smell, the dusty, the artworks, new discoveries and finds that let your heart beat in your throat.
And then, coming home skipping with this tight selection under your arm, I spend the rest of the evening checking my new acquisitions. Because if you already have so many plates in the closet, you activate the other plates that you already had, with this new purchase...
To me, this is one of my biggest kicks and I absolutely can't get enough!

SOUNDBLOSSOM

Oh yes, I also have to mansion that I deejay. Nothing serious or professional, just for fun. It's a hobby where I work on fervently with periods. I love to mix with vinyl, and vinyl only! No Serato, Traktor Scratch or mp3.
I am a craftsman in everything I do (remember?).

My setup consists of two MK2 Technics - sl 1200 with Ortofon Pro (concorde needles).
And Ecler mixer, NUO 2.0.

My skills are limited to beat mixing and cautious scratching. But that gives me just enough features to make a homogeneous mix and blow up a party with some eclectic floorfillers.
Now and then I also play some plates on the radioshow: BREAXITY @ Urgent.fm
To give you an example, I post a recording of one of my guest appearances.
In the first hour of the show you hear a mixed up selection of my dubby breaks collection. In the second part you hear my good friend mixing some Bassline & dubstep.
<ins>https://blog.janduprez.be/breaxity/</ins>
Select show; Breaxity 05 march 2016 ft Soundblossom

Thank for taking your time to read my blog and when there's enough interest, I intend to explore and write more about this subject.

Cheers!
