The gloomy dawns were the only times he could breathe into the outside world, while people were tucked in, fast asleep, lost in the countless dreams or nightmares that's when you don't have to make eye contact or useless conversations and he loved it, loved the freedom with fresh air. Throwing away the half smoked cigarette, he lit a new one. His eyes skimmed through the surroundings, only to find the shadows of the night still lurking around every corner of the abandoned building. A bitter laugh broke out from his lips as the irony of his current situation started to set in. Closing his eyes, he took a long drag, desperately wanting to fill the void, even though the effect was temporary.

“You are sad.”

The voice floated around the air as whispers, barely audible at first, but he could still hear it, he could always hear her. A soft smile broke out on his chapped lips as he started to look around, trying to find her through the abandoned shadows of last night.

“You came.” he whispered back, eyes still looking around for the familiar figure.

He then felt it, the soft touch on his shoulder and a breath of relief escaped his form, something he didn’t know he was holding in. Turning back, he met the sad blue eyes showing the depth of love he could never get used to, so he averted his eyes back to the ground, noticing the dusty plaster along with her bare feet. He let out a chuckle, wondering the reason behind this transformation.

“Don’t do it.” she softly whispered those words, not taking her eyes off of him for a second.

He met her blue eyes again only to find the desperate plea for him to stay. His eyes traced back to the object he was holding in his hand, clenching it tightly enough for the knuckles to turn pale. “Please.” She whispered again, this time her voice cracked a little, a clear sign of distress.

He took another long drag, eyes looking at anything but her, “You speak like I have a choice.” a bitter laugh escaped from his hollow chest, “How many times do we have to repeat this?” He questioned her as anger started to build in, “Aren’t you satisfied yet?” he took a step closer, a frown started to form on his face, “Isn't it enough?”

For once, she didn’t answer back, but the intensity of her blue was strong enough for him to submit, something he hated to do. “Stop looking at me like that." he finally snapped, "Stop making this sudden approaches to say those fucking words. Words mean nothing. You hear me! words mean nothing. They are useless, hollow and made up, wrapped in nothing but lies, just like me. Stop giving me this illusion that I have a choice, that everything will magically become fine one day, stop delaying my exit route and don’t you fucking dare to pity me. You know nothing. You just fuckin–” Suddenly he felt her both hands, holding his face in between, forcing him to look at her. He felt her fingers, softly caressed his cheek, wiping the tears he didn’t know were flowing.

“One more day.” she finally whispered back, emphasizing those words like a spell, forcing him to look at her long enough to pull the effect. And just like that, both of them fell into the repeating loop, again.

He felt defeated, lost, tired, and her blue was the only anchor he could find in the vast hollow ocean, “Just one more day”, he repeated after her. A soft smile broke onto her lips as she nodded with agreement.

The morning light started to push the shadows into oblivion and he knew it’s time to get back to the real world, the world he tried so desperately to run away from. He started to walk for the exit, but stopped at the door, for a brief moment he looked back, but she was already gone. The place was as empty as it was before.

“One more day” he whispered back one last time to no one in particular before leaving the abandoned building, the only witness of his losing battle.
