"Ms. Grey, this town was established here because there *aren't* any magical spills left over from The Collapse.  So unless you plan on importing rodents that have been tainted by magic, I'll stick to my non-magical devices.  Now if you could close up your--"

"Unless you can cite a specific law that forbids the sale of specific items at a yard sale, my tables will remain where they are," Alexandra interrupted, crossing her arms stubbornly.  "And furthermore, I would appreciate being called Alexandra.  No need for this 'Ms. Grey' nonsense."

The sheriff suddenly coughed and turned away.  Was that a *smirk* she saw him trying to hide?  However, he was straight-faced when he turned back and nodded at her.

"Very well, *Alexandra*.  I've done what I can for the moment.  I expect I'll be back before long with a new town ordinance prohibiting the sale of magical goods."

"Well, until then, if you need a charm you know where to look," she said, offering her best business smile.

The sheriff shook his head and started back toward his vehicle.  It was clear that it was his off-duty vehicle, as she noted the lack of official emergency vehicle lighting, but it was the pair of skis strapped to the rack atop the SUV that caught her eye.

"Sheriff?" she called.

He stopped, one hand on the driver-side door, and looked at her.

"If you plan on going up the mountain to ski, I have a variety of warming charms that you might find useful," she grinned.

She could see shoulders fall as he sighed before climbing into the car and pulling out of her driveway.

*What an interesting adventure this will be,* she thought, smiling to herself.
