I've said it for a long time. Especially to my libertarian friends. I've said that the "Just start your own" as a one-size-fits-all argument to everything wrong with the world is just not gonna cut it at some point.

Yea, if you really think there are no good carpenter business in your neighbourhood, and you happen to have this great idea for how to run a carpentry business, it may be a good idea for you to start your own carpentry business.

Maybe your idea truly is really great, and you can soon live that hookers and blow high life. Who knows.

But me personally, I've been eagerly - well, not eagerly, I'm scared shitless - waiting for the day when people who have been convicted for *"hate speech"* are simply denied banking services.

Or electricity.

Yeah, starting your own carpentry business is probably within your reach if you happen to be good with your hands, and you have some pre-existing interest and experience in the field, but someone is simply denied all access to electricity by all companies that provide it, it's pretty hilarious when the libertarian will simply tell the guy to: *"Start your own company if you don't like how things are"*.

Just produce your own electricity, ez.

Same with banking. And whatever else.

And oh yea, when that private road owner finally states that *"No racists/sexists/homophobes/whatever have you"* allowed on this one and only highway between you and your destination, you're gonna have to phone work and tell them you're gonna be a bit late, you have a road to build. May take a few months.

My point being.

Facebook's cryptocurrency may be a first step to a rather depressing dystopia where a version of China's social credit system gets implemented. What if your access to your money starts to be tied to your social behaviour? What you say, what you post on social media, who you vote for, who you support - how you think.

YouTube, Facebook, Twitter... all these social medias are already making an effort to clean up all unpopular opinions off of their site. And in doing so, strongly shaping up the official narrative of what is true and what isn't. As in what is officially accepted as true, and what isn't.

The libertarian will most likely chime in and say something to the effect of: *"This sort of dystopia would never happen because the market would punish companies that discriminated against freedom of opinion like this!"*

Oh yeah? Then why can sites like YouTube and Facebook - that depend on having people use them - afford to drive away people who wrongthink?

Because they're a small minority - and the goodwill they earn for their image when they drive those evil racists and anti-feminists away is more than enough to compensate for any minor losses they may suffer when a few people boycott them.

Simply put, these businesses don't need you or me. They don't need the little guys. They absolutely can afford to tell you to go fuck yourself, and thrive.

It's a libertarian delusion that the individual somehow matters.

Like fuck he does.
