***You may have heard of autonomous cars. But an autonomous ship? That’s something that you can get from Rolls-Royce.***

The company that is most well known for their luxurious cars or for their plane engines can be qualified only as ambitious. In the next six years, they want to create a remote control freighter. And recently, they successfully finished testing their autonomous ship.

They cooperated with the Finnish state trasportation company – Finferries. The test took place near the Finnish city Turk – about 90 km from Helsinky. The report says that they used a car freighter known as Falco that measures 53.8 meters long.

This ship used the Rolls-Royce Ship Intelligence technology. This uses many cameras and sensors around the ships to scan the environment – mostly other ships and artificial inteligence helps decide whether they pose danger to the ship. The technology allows the ships to fully autonomously flow on open sea but also for a fully autonomous docking.

Autonomous ships may be a thing we will need to get used to very quickly as this technology isn’t just a prototype or a concept. And it has the potential to transform transportation on water as we know it.
