Amphitrite Point Lighthouse is an active lighthouse near Uclulelet on the west coast of Vancouver Island. Named after Amphitrite, the sea goddess and wife of Poseidon in Greek mythology. The first lighthouse at this site was a small wooden tower erected in 1906, the original structure was destroyed by waves in 1914. It took about eight months to build a replacement structure. The new concrete lighthouse was completed in March 1915, and is what is still standing today. Amphitrite Point is exposed to frequent gale-force winds, tidal waves and is also in a tsunami inundation zone, the lighthouse derives its peculiar shape and construction so that it is able to withstand the strong westerly storms coming off the Pacific Ocean. It was staffed by Canadian Coast Guard lighthouse keepers from 1915 until 1988, when it was automated. Thanks for reading. Scott For more images and stories - http://www.scottstevensonphotography.ca/
