Billy could see a group of girls playing hopscotch near the school building. Another group was playing jacks on the sidewalk. Half-a-dozen boys were trying to play football out in the field, without enough players for it to really work very well. Several children were occupying the swings, swishing down the slides, and clambering around on the monkey bars. Everyone was busy, and everyone was having a good time. Except Billy. It was his first day at this school, and nobody knew him. He was sure nobody wanted to know him, either. This was his sixth school in four years, and nobody ever wanted to know him. He wore thick glasses, and walked with a limp, and spoke very slowly. He thought of himself as a nice, kind, pleasant person, but little children are mean and could never seem to get past his appearance. So it was safer to just stand close to the doorway and never step out of the shadow. As long as he remained hidden, nobody could say mean things to him. Even the teacher on playground duty hadn't noticed his small form. He was invisible, and he was safe.
*I'm glad the timer went off, because I had no idea where to go next with this one!*
Thanks to @mariannewest for the daily freewrite prompts!
