I knew a mortgage broker who ran her business focused on mortgages for women. There’s often a bias when women apply for credit items like mortgages. She want to bat for women to get the the best deal possible. Her company branding included the phrase, “Winning the lottery is not a financial plan”. She wasn’t far off on some attitudes. The line applied to both men and women. When I was in the bankruptcy and insolvency field I would do counseling with clients as part of their filings. The process of recovering from financial difficulties is meant to not only resolve the debt situation but to learn how to build some resilience into their financial life to avoid a repeat. It never failed to surprise me the number of clients who balked at any serious discussion of budgeting, savings or planning for the future. Some believed they had no money and would resist any effort to find out how they spent their money to see if they could find funds they didn’t know they had. They weren’t without dreams of a better life. They wanted things like a comfortable bank account and even owning a home. They just thought it would work better if they won the lottery. That was actually the response I would get all too frequently. Many of us, if not all, do variations on this approach in our life. How often do you think about a goal you have? Maybe even talk about it. You’ll talk it out, visualize it, plan what it will look and feel like. And then you go on doing what you are doing without taking any steps to lead you to the goal. Years go by and it’s still a goal. A goal without a path to it. I certainly would be guilty of those actions, or lack of them. Then I reach a point in life where I start to get the idea, it’s too late, I screwed around too long without taking action. That’s the point where I have to firmly remind myself huge corporations have been started by people older than me. It’s never really too late. This, right here is an example of waiting instead of doing. I wanted to write and earn a living much earlier in my life. I failed to believe I had the talent to write or the ability to earn. The desire to do so was pushed aside while I did things that would make me income. ` It was six years ago before I finally started to take steps into the world of making money for writing. I found the opportunity and instead of looking wishfully at the site, I joined and started working at it. Even then I didn’t work with the consistency I should have been using. In the last few months, I’ve changed that. I write for publication every day. I’m shooting to maintain that going forward. Recently I’ve come across @bradleyarrow’s posts and read in one of them that he’s posted 1082 days of blog posts and was approaching having done 850 videos. Now, there is a guy who made a plan and executed on it. He took the steps to get started. This weekend a group I meet with every day held a two day workshop for a couple of hours each day. The purpose of the workshop was to review where we’ve been so far this year and where we want to be in January. There was more to it than that but you get the idea. One of the group talked about where she wanted to be and included that she needed to trust herself to act. She was speaking in a very specific context but, you know, we all need to do that. We need to trust our self to act, to step up and take the steps toward the goals that matter. To set the path, even if it needs to wander from a straightline. It doesn’t matter. A stream will meander through the woods and still come out where it’s headed. After many years of delay, I finally acted and started writing. I let the path meander when I wasn’t writing consistently but it’s been on a consistent direction lately. I’ve added creating books and writing a weekly newsletter to the path. There is more to come. Where’s your path traveling? *Shadowspub is a writer from Ontario, Canada. She writes on a variety of subjects as she pursues her passion for learning.
