[](https://i.imgur.com/eX74RDw.jpg) Hermanus is a small town in South Africa. It is located along Walker Bay on the southern coast of the Western Cape province of South Africa, approximately 115 km southeast of Cape Town. [](https://i.imgur.com/GWHlXLc.jpg) The town is really small, a resort town now, and because of this, as well as the privacy and scenic beauty of the area, the atmosphere here is very cozy. On one side of the town there are mountains, and on the other the ocean, and Hermanus itself stretches in length along the coast. [](https://i.imgur.com/N8GAOwn.jpg) The mountains are generally low, walking in such mountains is a pleasure, there are paths and observation points, everything for hikers. You can visit, for example, Fernkloof Nature Reserve. [](https://i.imgur.com/1ZmTpAM.jpg) Local vineyards and wineries begin right in the mountains and further, which should also be included in the plans of the visit โ the wines in South Africa are quite worthy. [](https://i.imgur.com/RHgDzp5.jpg) We stopped by a couple of wineries earlier, before Hermanus, and came here with a different purpose. This goal was the ocean. Well, and a few more of those who live in it :) [](https://i.imgur.com/En9Ee8U.jpg) It's no secret that Hermanus is one of the best whale watching spots in the world. Seeing whales is a very good, but not a guaranteed event. But the ocean itself ... [](https://i.imgur.com/3T3krRf.jpg) ... well, it's the ocean โ it's always beautiful :) And when the waves on it, and the streaks of sea foam turn white near the coast, and the sun is shining tenderly, then you just need to look at this view and enjoy the moment. [](https://i.imgur.com/MOHhXF7.jpg) I have always loved such places โ seas and oceans, and since I started diving, my love for water has grown even more. [](https://i.imgur.com/UlBGuWL.jpg) We came to Hermanus in May 2019. We only stayed for one night there โ well, that's understandable, South Africa is big, and travel time, as always, is very limited. Therefore, I will not pretend to have any extensive and complete acquaintance with the town, but simply tell about what I saw and learned. [](https://i.imgur.com/hLexZEu.jpg) We lived at The Whale Coast Hotel (this is a complex of buildings with a dark, seemingly common composite roof in the photo below). The hotel is good, and the neighborhood is also excellent, comfortable โ as far as I understood, this is the center of the town. [](https://i.imgur.com/JHd4ZLN.jpg) Not far away is one of the town's attractions โ Hoy's Koppie hill, you can see it in the photo on the top left. You can easily climb there along the equipped path and enjoy the view of the town from above. This is especially interesting for those who do not have a drone :) Also nearby is Old Hermanus Harbor with its own museum, and a pretty promenade with some nice sculptures. [](https://i.imgur.com/A01pSAP.jpg) Due to the fact that the coast is very rocky and indented, the coastline looks great both from above and from below. [](https://i.imgur.com/nhqQ5Xv.jpg) Along a large part of coast, right along the cliffs, there is a scenic trail called Hermanus Cliff Pass, which is ideal for walking, and, in addition to a magnificent view of the ocean, is also good for watching whales in the bay during the season when they come there (July-December). [](https://i.imgur.com/Ot2RmaQ.jpg) Despite the traditionally large number of people who want to settle near the coast and find their own closed piece of territory with a good view of the ocean, the trail is surprisingly mostly kept open for everyone to visit, and not entirely built up with private villas without access to the coast, although there are villas in the vicinity clearly enough. [](https://i.imgur.com/dnSacfz.jpg) But I'll tell you about the path and show it a little more another time, in another post. [](https://i.imgur.com/SN9reZg.jpg) In the meantime, let's just admire the foggy views of the town a little more. I love fog :) [](https://i.imgur.com/9spnUbF.jpg) Birds have taken a liking to the coastal rocks. Near the land, and people do not particularly bother them :) For birdwatching, as I heard, the town suits very well: in addition to the diversity of the flora, this area also contains many different birds, including quite rare species. [](https://i.imgur.com/U0OoDGC.jpg) Look closely, and in the photo you will notice many black dots on the sunlit rock. These are the birds, sitting and basking in the sun. [](https://i.imgur.com/rnzqzLv.jpg) Along the town itself, the coast, despite all the beauty and picturesqueness, is generally not very suitable for mass swimming (well, perhaps only some small places): everywhere there are rocks and strong waves. But at the eastern end of the town is one of the notable sights of Hermanus โ Grotto Beach. We didn't get there, and didn't even fly with the drone, but according to reviews, it is very large, clean with white sand, comfortable for swimming. Maybe if I find myself here again, I'll look here too :) [](https://i.imgur.com/Svld9yP.jpg) Well, sooner or later the day ends and the sunset comes. Therefore, we walked a little more along the embankment, but still soon returned to the hotel. By the way, it is quite safe for tourists to walk around the streets in the evenings โ in this regard, Hermanus compares favorably with many places and cities in South Africa. [](https://i.imgur.com/3avvcyu.jpg) Dinner was lovely, as in many coastal towns โ fresh fish and seafood dinner is good and a good dinner makes the stay even better :) [](https://i.imgur.com/hzcy0Zv.jpg) Enjoy your dreams, Hermanus! In the morning of the next day, before leaving the town, we went for a walk along the Hermanus Cliff Pass, a photo from there and the results of looking for whales I'll show next time, as well as several night views of the town :) [](https://i.imgur.com/X63oNEp.jpg) It's better to watch the photos in high resolution. ------------------ >All photos of the post were taken with a DJI Mavic 2 Pro. ------------------ You can also see my photos in my blog [LJ](https://shark-er.livejournal.com/) and in my profile on [NatGeo](https://nat-geo.ru/community/user/185952/) ------------------ https://i.imgur.com/xno9vvo.png [//]:# (!pinmapple -34.419448 lat 19.244251 long d3scr)
