Malasadas are fried Portuguese dough balls that are traditionally rolled in sugar and cinnamon. These are different from American donuts in that there is no hole in the middle. They were frequently consumed on Fat Tuesday, the day before Lent.

Portuguese immigrants arrived in Hawaii in 1878 to work on sugar fields. They kept their Fat Tuesday customs going, and the islands have dubbed it Malasada Day.

Malasadas on the Big Island can be found in three main stops: Punalu’u Bakery in Naalehu, Tex Drive-In in Honokaa, and the Hot Malasadas Truck near Puako.

This blue food truck has become a hotspot for malasadas. It's parked in a dirt pullout near the Puako exit on Highway 11. This is a fantastic treat area if you are coming or going to Hapuna Beach, which is right down the road, or if you are traveling to Hawi.

The texture of malasadas is what distinguishes them from regular donut. The pastry must be crispy on the exterior and fluffy on the interior.

The classic malasada is simply dusted with sugar, but Hawaiian bakeries have created a variety of them, including dipping them in chocolate sauce or filling them with coconut-flavored haupia pudding.
