How to make sure that your child will be ready to attend school when the time comes

From a very young age kids are always so excited to go to the 'big school', but we all know that it is very important that they are emotionally and mentally ready to go and not fall behind or let the whole school experience become a night mare.

You as a parent can do a few basic thing to make sure that they will be ready when the time comes.

First of all you need to remember that doing thing with your child and getting them ready to join school at the right age, does not mean you have to drill them the whole day or always compare them to other children. They need time off and they need to play and get dirty and use their imaginations.

There are a lot more to life than just studying work from a book, they must also be socially adapted and be able to be themselves and solve certain problems for themselves... in other words have life skills, not only knowledge from a book that they cannot apply in real life.

You do not have to try and teach your child to read, some kids will pick it up before they go to school and some will not, but reading to your child and instilling a love for books are important.

If you have read a story to them, talk about the story, ask questions and let them re-tell the story in their own words. This will teach them to concentrate and also be able to tell things in the correct order and in their own words which eventually will help them to summarize certain reading or learning material from books.

Teach your child that in order to be listened to, we also need to listen to others. We need to give others a chance and when somebody is speaking, we need to be quiet and listen to what they have to say and then when it is our turn we can speak.

It is very important that if your child gets older, you teach them how to rely on themselves. They need to know that mommy or daddy will not always be with them and sometimes they need to do something for themselves like pick up their own stuff, or fasten their shoes or make themselves a sandwich.

This is a huge problem these days, especially with working parents, they feel guilty and want to make up by doing everything for their child.

There is nothing wrong with doing stuff for them but sometimes they need to rely on themselves and sort out their own problems. How will a child learn to think for themselves if you always think for them?

You have to have a talk with your child about accepting themselves and be thankful for what they have and be kind to others, but also how to stand up against other people or children that want to bully and hurt them.

Nothing is stopping you to do some fun learning activities with your child but remember the emphasis is on FUN. We all want to believe that our children are the most clever of all, but at the end of the day each child learns at their own pace and time and that is okay.

Do not spoil your child's experience even before it has started.
