After some days without painting, today I feel the needed to leave my hand free to give some brush strokes of oil colors. I took a couple of pieces of cardbord (the brown cardboard of the used boxes) and I placed myself in my worker corner.

My brushes, my palettes, my oil colors, a bit of turpentine and an old cotton rag. I chose to use just the white and the black colors, just to leave my imagination (and my hands) free to work.

The results were 2 different squares where you can see (using just few brush strokes) a deer and a bird.

The subjects, the surface, the difference from brush to brush, the technique. The only thing in my mind was:let the imagination free to work!

So, after the first strokes of white colors on the background, a couple of grey animals have appeared on the cardbord. Simple forms as in the primitive art.

Usually I don't paint in a primitive style, but I have to say that I like this style so much. One of my friends, an italian painter and sculptor, usually work on this style and his artwork are really full of meanings for me. I can't explain, but when I watch a piece that reminds me primitive people my emotions are "shaked" and it's a great sensation!

"Primitive art" is a vague term to describe artworks (paintings and sculptures) that remind to the artifacts made by primitive people, for example African or Aboriginal art or tribal art. In this kind of art there are ethnographic forms, simple forms with a big visual power.

The primitive art emerged at the end of the 1800, with some paintings of Paul Gauguin, who included some tahitian motives in his artworks. After this, many different artists was influenced by the artifacts of prehistoric people. Also Pablo Picasso was strongly inspired by the simplicity and the power of the primitive cultures, especially by sculptures and tribal masks from Iberia and Africa. Picasso had his own Primitive/ African Period between the 1906 and the 1909 as a sort of proto-cubism; some of his works of that period are Dryad, Trois femmes (three women), Les demoiselles d'Avignon and others.

In that years (the first years of the 1900) the african artifacts had a great notoriety because they was exhibited in the museums in Paris as a consequence of the new colonies of the French empire in the sub-saharan Africa and the news paper shared some exotic stories about that population, so many artists was interested to better know that cultures.

You can read more about the primitive art here:

http://www.visual-arts-cork.com/history-of-art/primitivism.htm

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Primitivism

http://www.tate.org.uk/art/art-terms/p/primitivism

As you can understand, it's always a good exercise for my hands to "explore" a style that usually I don't use.

I hope you like them ^_^

See ya soon

Silvia
