Hello Steemian so this for now will be the last part of this series, can you imagine that this all started with such a silly question: What does elephants, rubbish and Argentina have in common? I know right, strange.. http://www.onlineuniversities.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/07/100timesave7.jpg ------------ onlineuniversities.com ------------ If you missed that post you can still read it and upvote it here: https://steemit.com/education/@simonjay/what-does-elephants-rubbish-and-argentina-have-in-common-25-9-2017 If you could do that it would be awesome as I still need another 38 SBD to get my plane ticket to Steemfest 2 So with that strange question what did we discover from the original report? Well we learned that humans have produced 8.3 billion tonnes of plastics since 1950. Which is the equivalent weight of one billion elephants. Argentina? Well if we were to spread out all of those plastics at an ankle deep level it would cover the landmass of Argentina. With this in mind we looked into another question, would knowing these results get people to change their habits? --------- samsung.com -------- Probably not, but one solution potentially discovered is virtual reality... Sounds weird huh? But we discovered a professor who has already been producing virtual reality experiences that are showing results in changing peoples habits and how they think and handle their waste. You can read more on that in part 2 and there is still time to upvote that post here: https://steemit.com/education/@simonjay/virtual-reality-seeks-to-explain-25-9-2017 I ended part 2 promising we would look even deeper into these VR experiences which are said to be changing peoples habits. We started by looking into filmmaker Michael Owen who as produced one experience based in Russia’s Lake Baikal. --------- spb.ru --------- We discovered that the legendary BBC’s David Attenborough has also produced a VR experience in which you and him go as a team sub-diving. Lastly we looked at one which thank goodness looks into aiding animal welfare. The experience is called iAnimal its said to be a distressing and harrowing experience for its viewers but said necessary as an examination of our horrid factory farms as you can imagine its not a very nice experience but these poor animals are living in that reality every single day let alone a few minutes of VR. ------------- holidogtimes.com -------------- All this and their vision for the future can be found here: https://steemit.com/education/@simonjay/vr-reef-experience-27-9-2017 Ok so lastly there is one more thing I want to quickly look at before ending this series and it as to do with Pokemon. I know what your thinking how can this series get any more crazy? Well basically along with VR there's also something called AR or in other words "Augmented Reality" Augmented Reality? Well to put it simply most people I bet are going to know AR from games like Pokémon Go. If not then maybe some of you probably have downloaded different apps on your smartphone which basically function as virtual tour guides for various city destinations. https://saudigamer.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/01/122.jpg ------------ saudigamer.com -------------- There are many scientists and developers who are saying that there are of course many more opportunities with AR for games and concepts. So with this they can add more concepts which are more environmentally focused. And infact there is already something out there created by the Dutch, and the team behind Doom Prepper Sailors. Basically it mixes some remote control boats with AR, doesn't it sound fun already? Especially for kids and I myself have always wanted one of those remote control boats lol. Anyway this is to create a game that has the intention of helping us clean up plastic debris from rivers, canals and also encourage long term awareness of the waters state and pollution. ---------------- Here is their Mexican team explaining their vision -------------- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Is-QD-IeWKk ---------------- Doom Prepper Sailors - Pitch -------------- If anybody happens to knows of any others like this let me know in the comments below. So while VR and AR remains a technology that has not quite broken into the mainstream just yet as I said previously in part 3 when it does there will be a huge opportunity to use it for raising all sorts of ecological issues and awareness on many many other things. I guess the plan is if they can make the experience real enough, rather then using teaching or reading methods, if we can instead see and interact with the experience even further it wont be something you'll forget for many years. ----------- internapcdn.net ------------------ ### 38 More Steem Needed So I Can Book A Flight For SteemFest 2!
