Fungi Friday - Fungi in the Desert?!
Here are some fungi finds from the desert of Arizona for this #fungifriday by @ewkaw

Even in the harsh dry desert fungi manages to grow in the form of lichens. This one almost looks like copper ore.

This green one is quite familiar looking and shows the the algae and fungi symbiosis to create a lifeform that can survive a harsh environment like the desert.

Here is a mixture of the standard green lichen with a bright yellow lichen. Apparently there are 18,000 different lichen species that have been identified so far. No doubt there are plenty of undiscovered ones too.

More of the neon green lichens.

I wonder if the large grasshoppers munch a bit on these lichens? Soon a lizard will munch on this guy.

The mountain rocks are covered in them
These are the rocks the lichens live on. They heat up in the day then cool off at night and in the brief time between night and day some slight bits of moisture collect on the face of the rocks to feed the lichens.

Meanwhile in the river valley I stumbled on some ink caps growing beneath some cottonwood leaves. The leaves and the wet soil were enough for some spores to take hold and grow ink caps.

I doubt many other types of fungi grow here as it is so dry other than next to the riverbed.

Also I wouldn't harvest any fungi from this area as right next to the river there is a gunpowder and fertilizer factory. So no doubt the fungi would contain many chemicals from the runoff from this plant.

That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)
