6.592 HBDFungi Friday - Three Mushroom Sightings
Here are three different mushroom sightings for this #fungifriday Here are some mock oysters. These often get confused with true oyster mushrooms as they have similar gills. The main difference is these kind of have no stem and tend to be smaller and don't smell that good compared to an oyster (kinda of a musty smell). Their Latin name is Phyllotopsis nidulans. Fortunately if you do end up accidentally harvesting and cooking these thinking they are oysters they are not poisonous, I suspect they don't taste that great though. These guys are sprouting everywhere in all the planters in my town. They look quite familiar similar to the shape of a blewit. When I flipped some over they have a similar gill pattern as a blewit but their dark stem and overall size and color suggest they are something different. For now they remain unidentified in the LBM category (little brown mushroom). So many of them were in all the planters downtown. Even if they were edible I wouldn't harvest them because of potential herbicides in this mulch. Now for loads and loads of bird's nest fungi. This is them before their tops have dried up. They emerge as an orange pin then the top dries up and reveals a nest full of little eggs that spread the spores. There are numerous types of bird's nest fungi. I suspect these ones are Cyathus striatus as they have the kind of rough tops while other types are more round and smooth. Eventually as the sun hits them they leave behind an intricate pock marked structure full of eggs. Then they sit there waiting for the nest rainstorm to displace the eggs. Here is a video of how their flying eggs work. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/_EBipTLgPUw?si=x0pq3Kzhn7PE6-x8" title="YouTube video player" frameborder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share" referrerpolicy="strict-origin-when-cross-origin" allowfullscreen></iframe> That's all for now, thanks for looking :-)
