Mushroom Monday - Pycnoporus cinnabarinus

I found this polypore growing on some cut branches.

You can see this from quite a distance away.

This mushroom can be found around the world. The only uses I have read about are by Aboriginees in Australia using it to cure mouth sores. I have also read that it can be used in paper production to break down tough parts of the wood before milling it into paper. It contains lignolytic enzymes that are extracted for industrial use in paper production and even transforming aromatic compounds in plants for various scents.

For a general forager like me it just looks cool. It is way too tough to eat and medicinal uses aren't proven.

I also found some kind of weird slime mold growing on some charcoal. Burnt wood in the forest usually has some kind of fungi growing on it. I suspect this might be the start of some raspberry slime mold. That's it for this #mushroommonday
