Stock Tip of the Day 9.21.18
# In a world of exciting tech companies it is important to reflect on the basics of investing and how to find companies with long term resilience.

Consumer staples stocks like Heinz, General Mills and McCormick are some of the most hated names on the public markets today. Everyone wants to invest in Amazon at a trillion dollar market cap or pot stocks that will make them an instant millionaire. However, consumer staples stocks with good brands will probably be around for another 100 years making today's investor rich in the long term while collecting nice dividend payments.

The key to investing in the right consumer staple stock (and many other stock ideas) is to make sure the company is consistently growing revenue (sales) and earnings (profit).

Heinz has a great brand but it has struggled for years to grow sales. Where as McCormick is firing on all cylinders steadily increasing sales and earning nice profits along the way. McCormick will be a great buy sometime in the future when shares pullback to a more favorable valuation (i.e. wait for the equivalent of Macy's labor day sale).

### The consumer staples company I would buy today is General Mills (GIS).
This company owns many household brand names and is on of the best consumer staples business in the world. Think Cheerios, Nature Valley and Progresso.

After a tough few years, General Mills is back on the right track growing sales.

If you believe your Children and Grandchildren are likely to eat Cheerios in the future this is a great company to own forever. Buy today and leave the shares for your kids inheritance.

Happy Friday. Cheers!
