They say money is the root of all evil. That it is the main reason why crimes are committed - or, is it?

"Nagawa ko lang naman 'yon dahil kailangan ko ng pambili ng pagkain." "Wala po kasi akong pera." "Mas malaki kasi kita dito."
Filipinos hear those lines so often in the news when someone committed a crime get caught – be it robbery, murder, drug and human trafficking, riding-in-tandem, kidnapping, and the list goes on. Their reasons for doing so have one thing in common — money, or the lack thereof. Is money really the root of evil? No.

So What Is It?
The root of all evil is not being contented. People who are thirsty for money, fame, and power, have the will to do anything good or bad, to achieve their goals. People who are greedy and not content with what they have are most likely willing to do crime.
"Nagawa ko lang naman 'yon dahil kailangan ko ng pambili ng pagkain." "I only did that because I need money to buy food." If you are starving, you will have no enough energy to commit a crime. If you know you already have nothing to eat the next day, there are a lot of ways to solve your problem - not robbery nor snatching. You can ask your neighbors and wash their clothes or clean their backyard in exchange of a small amount. You can find jobs for a more stable income. You can ask your friends to lend you money. It takes a lot more time to sell what you have robbed and earn money than to actually do the things I have mentioned.
"Wala po kasi akong pera." "I don’t have money." That's not a problem at all. Find a job! Not all jobs require a lot of things. Have never gone to school? You can ask your neighbor's bakeshop and be a helper. If you have amazing talent, you can use that for your own good! Sell your work and pieces, ask your local radio to play your song, dance instruct. There are a lot of ways to earn without doing something bad and illegal.

"Mas malaki kasi kita dito." "It pays a lot more here." If it's too good to be true, it is. If you earn a lot because you're selling illegal drugs, or part of a syndicate, you are actually doing more harm than good. You may have financial freedom for now, but your freedom is at high risk. What's the use of your money if you're imprisoned? You're just there because you want easy money.

You see, there are a lot of better ways to earn money and achieve your goals. Most of these ways may take more time and effort. But believe me, the more you work for it, the more fulfilling it feels in the end. Be thankful of the current blessings you have and about to have, and use it for your own good to survive, and achieve your goals. Do not be stable, though.
