Beautiful Science
In these days of forced quarantine, I often do something that hasn't happened to me for years: spend some time every day wandering around social networks. The reason? Find funny facts and posts that can make people smile even in such a difficult moment.

Now... We could discuss what to consider fun or not, but everyone would have their own idea. So I will talk about what was fun for me, until now.
Until a few days ago, in fact, I had great laughs reading the countless posts of conspiracy theorists, no-vaxes, preppers, unscrewed kidnapped by aliens, and so on and so forth, about the **SARS-CoV-2**; yes, SARS-CoV-2, because that's the name of the virus that is forcing us all into our houses... And not Coronavirus. This improper use of the term is enough to generate a big mess; mess which, in turn, is then exploited by the ignorant (we call things by their name) to create crazy conspiracy theories.
I said "until a few days ago" because, in the last few days, that funny smile that appeared on my face every time I found the post of some idiot, has slowly given way first to a forbidden expression, and then to a pissed off one. My brain as a biologist, but before that as a able-mind person (perhaps), has closed progressively, refusing to accept other bullshit.

I could write an endless list of idiocies read in the last few days, but this is not the time; rather, this is the time to encourage all the science people who hang out on the web not to be indifferent to the disaster that is happening at the moment; it is necessary, and it is our duty, to act every time we read a solemn bullshit, beating the hands that typed them metaphorically. It happens to see kids (but also fifties) who, all upright, posted on social media phrases like "here's the truth about the coronavirus!", attaching the link to some YouTube videos or to some article written by strange characters with the intelligence of a Teletubbies; but the truth is not sought in this way, gentlemen! There is something profoundly dysfunctional in such an idea! The truth is sought by going to research and read the dozens of scientific articles that the world community is making available.
Unfortunately, however, we have been used to living in a world in which anyone feels entitled to argue about anything, and this is a profound evil in our society. I am sorry to inform you that the world should not work like this. There are people who have studied for years, some decades even, and it is disheartening to note that, in the eyes of a slice of the population, their words are worth less than those of some youtuber or some TV personality. There are situations where not everyone deserves freedom of expression, and this is one of those cases. Only those who have the knowledge can speak, our health is affected.
Those who sow weeds, bad information or generate fears through the construction of bizarre theses must be stopped, even with the means of democracy; just as a drug dealer or a robber is stopped. They are equally dangerous.

This must be done for the sake of science and truth, of course; but it must also be done to honor the many doctors, nurses and various scientists who in recent weeks have been sacrificing (some even literally) for all of us. Enough with the misinformation, enough with the imaginative theories and enough with the obsessions of persecution that generate conspiracies. Have the humility and intelligence to listen to those who have dedicated their lives to saving others or studying viruses! Nobody wants to hide something from you or make fun of you!
In the same way, however, even people of science must meet citizens. We have witnessed, in recent weeks, terrible mistakes made by very important scientists, in the desperate search for a little notoriety; just to give you an example, Dr. Maria Rita Gismondo, Director of the Clinical Microbiology, Virology and Diagnostics of Bioemergencies of Sacco Hospital in Milan and her now sadly famous phrase “I'm right about the coronavirus, I will make it a pendant." Dear doctor, not only you had made a big mistake, not only for days you have been trying to climb a very slippery mirror, but you have never even apologized for this huge mistake. Mistake, yes, at least at the beginning. Because none of us knew about this SARS-CoV-2, and it was legitimate, especially in the early stages, to have different opinions. Precisely because of our "non-knowledge", however, it was necessary to carefully weigh one's words before exposing oneself; and once we understood the seriousness of the situation, it would have been necessary to apologize (with the citizens, with the institutions and, I would add, directly with Dr. Burioni) and to withdraw the wrong statements, inviting all those Italians who had trusted those to change their behavior. But it was the lack of these actions that turned his mistake into a serious guilt.
Actions like these discredit science and open huge gates through which crazy theories without head and tail creep in. Theories that sometimes cause enormous damage, causing people to engage in wrong behaviors.

This is why science must be united now more than ever, and this is why each of us must do his part, even from home, even from his own PC. Not that there are other possibilities at the moment.
Let's stick together, give us a hand, and try to explain science clearly and effectively to those who don't trust us. There are many people ready to listen, and it is important that they are not beated in the face when they ask for an explanation. Let's get involved first, and everything will go well.

Finally, I invite you to share this video as much as possible, as requested by *Dr. Ilaria Capua*, of which you can find an interesting interview here and, if possible, to integrate it in your future posts by replacing (or alongside ) the banners of your respective communities, at least until the end of the emergency. Let us return the role that belongs to science.
