Half term week takes a twist - Back in time for trains.
It was half term last week here in Norfolk and for once I managed to take it off. On the first Saturday my youngest and I popped in to see my mum and stepdad whilst the eldest was at gymnastics. We entered empty handed but left with a 6 x 3' board upon which sat my old Hornby 00 train set.

It all started back in the late 80's when I received a train set for Christmas. I thought it was Hornby's Mighty Mallard set but after having a Google, the coaches in that set are incorrect. A search of the fantastic [Hornby Guide](http://www.hornbyguide.com/item_year_details.asp?itemyearid=2198) leads to to believe it may well have been the Blue Streak set. This set had the same Class A4 Locomotive but is the Sir Nigel Gresley and not the Mallard. This set has the correct teak coaches that I recall. Unfortunately the train is in mum's loft somewhere so we didn't get a chance to grab it.

Thankfully we managed to shoehorn the board into the boot of the car. Although showing its age, it was soon setup and running on the dining room table. I say soon, it had been stored in mum's garage and possibly not used since 1989 so out came the white vinegar to give everything a good clean.

I recalled having a few boxes of "stuff" labeled trains in the loft. My dad always wanted to get something setup in his garage but died before he had a chance. I found two boxes full of track, trains and accessories which was a good job as once of the points was damaged on the board so I was able to lift and replace it.

In between the youngest whizzing a little saddle tank drawn freight train around the track; the train is from a more modern little set they (I) got a few years back, I started trying to run my dad's engines. They've probably not been run since the 1980's and unfortunately they and many of the coaches are a little battered.

So, here's a breakdown of the locomotives I managed to get up and running (excuse the dust).

Great Western 4-6-0 Tender 2900 "Saint" Class - Saint David. Made in 1987 and 1988 by Hornby.

Great Western 0-6-0 Pannier Tank Class 94XX. Made by Lima (not too sure of the year).

Great Western 2-6-2 Tank Class 45XX. Made by Lima in 1978 I believe.

0-6-0 Tank Class 3F Jinty. Made by Hornby in 1978 and 1979. Although this did run there seems to be a few little issues somewhere as it keeps shorting the controller. Lets call it a work in progress.

The youngest seems to now have the bug and wants me to tidy the layout up, possibly extend it, so she can build a model in the garage. She won't get any complaints from me! The best thing being there's loads of stuff my dad never got around to using and that won't go to waste. Feels like a nice little tribute to him in a way (my daughters never got to to meet their grandad), making something from all the bits he bought but didn't get the chance to use.
