I see people getting excited about how SMTs may “solve” some issues and make steemit function better etc which I think in aspects it will. Now as a cynic who cares about the community I want to prepare some for the other side of what will happen and head off the doom and gloom talk.

You know what’s going to happen? Many of those who already have a great amount of Steem and power will be able to launch SMTs and gather even more power and Steem. All sorts of new ways and reasons to sell votes will spring up through them. There will be “great” projects that will be used to to increase value of a newly created SMT and then abandoned after the value has been milked out of it. Pump and dumps of all sorts. Consolidation of even more power in the hands of the few as those who have an inside track get to launch SMTs before the rest of us. Communities will spring up by bad actors who will operate under the guise of “community” while just gaming the community and profiting in a new way. Tons of Spam junk SMTs that will clutter and dilute some of the actual use cases. Oh, and there will be lots and lots of crying about all of the above! 

Now I am someone who is excited about them and think they will do good for Steem and steemit but let’s try to head off some of the doom and gloom that will spring up from unrealistic expectations.
