The Tale of the Smurl Family Haunting

What’s worse than thinking that a fixer upper house is going to be a fun project only to find out it’s actually a giant money sucker? Oh yeah. The money pit of a house also comes with malignant ghosts who try to kill you as well as your entire family. This was reality for over ten years for the Smurl Family, and this is their little-known story.

The True Story of the Smurl Family Haunting

John and Janet Smurl, along with their two teenage children as well as John’s parents lived in a beautiful home in Pennsylvania. Unfortunately, the large family experienced a rather damaging flood. The repairs deemed to be too high in cost in comparison to the value of the rest of the home, so they cut their losses and moved across the street to a fixer-upper. The family was sad to leave the home that they’d spent the last decade in, but they tried to maintain a positive attitude about it, seeing the small repairs the place needed as potential in the home rather than a headache.

No sooner than John Smurl opened the first can of fresh paint for the kitchen, their microwave that was unplugged at the time, ended up catching fire. The family chalked it up to being a strange off event, but the occurrences increased in both oddity as well as frequency. Terrible odors that they described as similar to sulfur floated through the house at times when there was no plumbing issues whatsoever. Their stove, though unplugged, caught fire about a week after the microwave, and even John’s parents began to take a turn for the worst in terms of their health.

John’s mother unfortunately had a heart attack, and now, funds were being used to care for her rather than fix up the home. The Smurls struggled week after week to keep their bills paid, and as they struggled, black orbs that emitted negative feelings could be seen floating around the home, especially circling Janet Smurl. She would also go on to state that an evil force had raped her while she was sleeping. The next morning, she awoke to find herself bleeding in her genital region, and also saw claw-like marks on her hips and thighs, further giving her story credit.

A few nights after that, John Smurl reported laying in bed with his wife and hearing the whisper of what sounded like a young woman. He was not facing his wife, so he thought perhaps she had been sleep talking. When he turned to face her, he saw an evil black figure quickly and creepily crawl up her leg and into her mouth.

The following years were complete insanity. Ceiling fans were falling off on their own after they had just been secured and kitchen chairs were being found stacked to the ceiling on their own. Even the family dog wasn’t safe from whatever was haunting the family as they witnessed their furry friend get picked up and thrown all the way into a wall in the other room. The dog lived, but it did sustain injuries. Janet stated that she would also be thrown into other rooms in the same manner.

As more years went on, the worse this haunting became. The family says that they did not leave because though the attacks were increasingly violent, they would often lie dormant for months at a time, leading them to gain false hope for time periods, and then be let down again. Towards the end, Jack stated that a demon had raped him with a baseball bat and medical records from the time back up this wild claim. Neighbors who were later interviewed stated that they could hear odd sounding screams when the entire family had been on vacation.

Eventually, paranormal investigators were called upon, and it was told to the Smurls that there were four spirits in the home, three of which were harmless. However, the fourth one was so malevolent and powerful that it even had tricked the other three spirits into attacking the family in other terrifying ways such as the whispering that it had been seen doing.

This case actually stirred up quite a bit of media attention, and no matter what paranormal investigators were attempting at the time, the house remained haunted, and the family remained scared to death. Finally, in 1987, the family left the house and town for good. Two years later, the house was approved for an exorcism, and since then, about three groups of new tenants have moved in and reported zero activity.
