The high-speed rail project that will connect New York to Washington in just 29 minutes has received verbal approval from the government, investor Elon Musk said, expressing "optimism" that a "formal" agreement could be reached "quickly".

The businessman and founder of the Tesla group and Space X, in a tweet on Twitter, also gave approval to the tunnel company, Boring Company, which he also set up.

"I have just received verbal approval from the government for the Boring Company project to build an underground hyperplane train between New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington in 29 minutes," the billionaire wrote.

New York is about 330 kilometers from Washington.

AFP contacted the US Transportation Department, which referred it to a White House spokesman, but the latter did not confirm the deal.

"We have had promising talks," he said. "We are determined to undertake infrastructure change projects, and we think that better solutions often come from innovation and energy in the private sector."
