The Guardian has a list of things that many of us do which may be pointless. Especially in the area of health the guidelines keep changing, but we develop habits and traditions despite evidence that they may be useless or even harmful. You can waste a lot of time trying to keep up with current advice too.

Looking through the list I see some that I could change:

1. Eating 5 portions a day of fruit. We get free fruit in the office and so I have a few of those. I try to have a fairly varied diet, but don't stick to strict rules. I just don't eat any meat, but I do have fish at least once a week.

3. I floss sometimes as the dentist recommended it. I feel it may clean my teeth a little better than just brushing with my electric brush.

4. My jeans do get washed every couple of weeks, but are not worn every day.

5. We have a landline along with broadband. It's used a fair bit and most calls are included, but some of the family get get free mobile calls. I could do without all the sales and 'Microsoft support' calls.

6. I don't drink 8 glasses of water each day. I probably have 2 or 3 plus some coffee and orange juice.

15. I wash my hair in the shower every other day, but only use shampoo about once a week. My hair seems okay with this.

17. I only peel vegetables if they are very dirty. Brushing is enough for some.

20. Pressing the lift close button seems to have an effect in the lifts at work, so I'll keep doing that. Pressing other buttons repeatedly probably has no effect.

23. I've played the lottery in an office syndicate for years. Got a small payout once and some free weeks from minor wins. At least some of the money goes to good causes, so I don't mind it as another tax.

28. I don't tend to stretch much before or after running, but what I do is not that strenuous. Not had any serious injuries from running, but my old body seems to be going wrong anyway.

39. I have a lot of CDs, but they are all ripped to the PC and get played on there. I wouldn't get rid of them as they mean something to me.

40. Reading the news can be a waste of time and depressing. Most of it is irrelevant, but then so is most of what you see on social media.
