Views of Dresden
This is our first visit to the city of Dresden. Until recently I had not seen much of eastern Germany apart from Berlin. This was the communist German Democratic Republic until about 30 years ago. The city was heavily bombed in the war, but some parts have been rebuilt as they were.

This church was rebuilt from a ruin with some parts reused. On some buildings you can spot the old parts was they are black from age and possibly fire.

This long mural has a parade of local rulers. The region is Saxony was independent before the country of Germany formed. Some of their old palaces still stand in the city, but are museums now.

As we are not here for long we did a city bus tour to get a flavour of the place. It passed big Volkswagen factory. Part of the city is quite hilly and there are some lovely big houses up there.

We made a stop at the Pfund dairy that is quite spectacular inside as it is covered in decorative tiles.

We had lunch in their café upstairs that has some lovely cheeses.

We also did a tour of the opera House that was rebuilt as it had been.

There are still some signs of the communist times. There are lots of bland apartment blocks. This mural looks to be of that era.

From a different era of the stable yard dating back hundreds of years. They would joust there.

This communist era bridge collapsed last year. Luckily nobody was hurt. When looking up the #dresden tag I found @city-of-dresden who just posted about the bridge.

It is a beautiful city in parts, but you have to accept that most of the old buildings were restored after the war as was done in much of Germany. War does not care about culture.
