Today, I'm  going to talk about **Goryeo-Jang.** Goryeo-Jang originally means a funeral carried out in Goryeo Dynasty(918-1392). But the term has been used as a different meaning more often. Almost all of the Koreans know what Goryeo-Jang means because we had been taught when we were at school. There is said when one's parents get older than 70-years old, his or her child goes to a mountain with their parents on a frame carrier,(Ji-Gae). and they leave their parents alone in the mountain. There is said, the reason why they have no choice but have to dump their parents was because of poverty. Sad story, isn't it?

But considering Goryeo Dynasty had Buddhism as a national thought and therefore the people regarded **filial piety** as a very important thing, it is hard to believe there was this kind of custom in Goryeo Dynasty. Well, after investigating some materials about Goryeo-Jang, I happened to know, there was nothing written about Goryeo-Jang in any of history books. So, the question is, where Goryeo-Jang came from?

Before we look into the origin of Goryeo-Jang, we have to know the whole story of it. It is said, there was a custom called 'Goryeo-Jang'. To lessen the burden of foods because of poverty, someone decided to dump his 70years-old mother to a mountain(Goryeo-Jang). He had a son and he climbed the mountain with his mother on a frame carrier, and his son. After a while, he found an adequate place to dump his mom. He said sorry to his mother, and he was about to go back home with tears in his eyes. But his son said, **"Wait! I have to go back and bring that Ji-Gae(a frame carrier). Cause next time I'll need it when I should dump you on the mountain."** The man was confused. 'Oh, what have I done?' And the man decided to bring his mother back home.

In China,  there is a story which is very similar to the story of Goryeo-Jang, on a storybook named Hyo-Ja-Jeon(the stories about filial son). The only difference is, a frame carrier changes into a wagon this time. Except this, the whole story and the lesson are the same to the ones of Goryeo-Jang's.

Now, coming back to the origin of Goryeo-Jang, it may be a sensitive subject so I'm doing it very carefully when talking about it, but of all of the theories about the origin of Goryeo-Jang, the most famous and dependable theory is that Imperial Japan had fabricated this story. 

The main idea of it is that when Imperial Japan invaded Korea, they naturally wanted to plunder some cultural properties of Joseon. But lots of cultural properties were actually in the graves. Soldiers of Imperial Japan enforced the people of Joseon to dig a grave, but since they had a Confucianism as a national thought so digging a grave had been considered as a sacrilege. 

But the soldiers didn't give up, and to make subjects of Joseon dig some graves, soldiers started to say "Hey, the person who had been buried below this grave is a terrible undutiful man. So, you're good to dig this one." By doing this, it is said that Imperial Japan sucessfully steal some cultural properties of Joseon.

As a proof of this theory, it is said that the story of Goryeo-Jang continuously appears on the storybooks written by Japanese. Apparently, the story appears the book named 'The legend of Joseon' and 'Joseon fairy tale Collection'. And both of them are written by Japanese, 'Miwa Tamaki' and the Japanese Government-General of Korea. Whether it is true or not, **I'm sure that the story of Goryeo-Jang is not true** at least as in Goryeo and Korea. I really want to let everyone know the truth that Goryeo-Jang wasn't a custom of Goryeo. Thank you.

오늘은 사람들에게 '고려의 풍습 중 하나'로 알려져 있는 **'고려장'**에 대해 소개합니다~ ^^ 고려장은 한자로 [高麗葬]이라고 표기하며, '고려에서 지내던 장례' 또는 '늙은 부모를 산에 내다 버리는 일' 크게 두 가지 의미가 있는데요. 한국에서 국어와 역사교육을 통해 배운 고려장의 개념은, 후자에 더욱 가까울 것 같습니다. 

제 기억이 정확하다면, 고려장은 과거 우리가 못 살던 시절, 부모가 70살이 되면 늙고 쇠약하여 밥만 축내는 존재로 여겨 입을 하나라도 덜고 가난에서 벗어나기 위해 부모를 산에 버리는 풍습이었다고 학교 교육을 통해 배운 기억이 있습니다.

그런데 여러분, **고려장이 사실은 고려에서 행해지지 않았을 가능성이 크다**는 사실, 알고 계셨나요? 고려 시대의 양대 역사서인 고려사와 고려사절요를 보면, 두 가지 모두에서 고려장이 행해졌다는 이야기를 찾아볼 수 없다고 해요. 또, 불교를 국가 종교로 삼고 있어 효도를 중시하던 고려 사회에서 부모를 산에 버린다는 개념이 이치에 맞는 표현인 것 같지도 않구요. 그렇다면, '고려장'이라는 풍습은 대체 어디서 생겨난 것이냐!?

고려장의 유래를 알아보기에 앞서, 고려장에 대한 이야기를 간단히 풀어 보겠습니다. [옛날 옛적 고려시대, 어느 가장이 70살이 되어 고려장 때를 맞이한 어머니를 지게에 지고 산으로 올라갑니다. 그 뒤를 아들이 쫓아옵니다. 가장이 어머니와 지게를 적당한 장소에 내려 놓고 눈물을 머금고 돌아오려 하는데, 갑자기 아들이 달려오며 소리칩니다. **"아버지, 저 지게 가져와야돼요. 제가 나중에 아버지를 산에 버릴 때 사용해야 하거든요."** 그러자 가장은 문득 깨달음을 얻고, 다시 어머니를 모시고 와 돌아가실 때까지 평생 봉양했습니다.]

조금 희화화해서 풀어쓰긴 했지만, 고려장의 메인 스토리와 교훈은 대략 이런 느낌입니다. 그런데 재미있는 것은, 중국의 역사서인 '효자전'에도 이와 비슷한 이야기가 등장한다는 점입니다. 그리고 효자전에 나오는 이야기와 고려장 이야기의 유일한 차이점은 '지게'가 '수레'로 바뀐다는 것, 딱 하나라고 하는데요. 그래서 고려장 이야기의 유래는 중국의 효자전일 것이라는 추측이 가장 큰 설득력을 얻고 있습니다. 

중국의 '부모 산에 버리기' 스토리가 고려장으로 변화하여 한국으로 들어온 원인으로 여러 가지 가설이 제기되고 있지만, 가장 힘을 얻고 있는 설은 바로 **'제국주의 일본 무덤 파헤치기 설**(제가 네이밍했습니다 ㅋㅋ)'입니다. 일제강점기, 일제는 조선의 문화유산을 약탈하려 마음먹었습니다. 그런데 문제는, 많은 문화유산이 무덤 안에 함께 묻혀 있다는 점이었습니다. 일제는 조선 백성들에게 문화유산 도굴을 위해 무덤을 파 낼것을 주문해지만, 유교 문화가 지배하고 있던 조선에서 누군가의 무덤을 판다는 것은 신성모독에 해당하는 일이었습니다.

그때, 일제는 한가지 꾀를 생각해 냈습니다. 고려장 이야기를 지어내고, 그 무덤에 묻힌 사람이 '부모를 버린 괘씸한 놈'이었다고 거짓말을 하여, 무덤을 파내도 된다는 합리적인 구실을 제공한 것이죠. 불쌍하게도, 조선 백성들은 그러한 이야기를 철썩같이 믿고(안 믿었어도 어차피 다른 방법으로 무덤을 파 내게 했을 가능성이 크지만) 많은 무덤을 도굴하게 되었고, 일제는 손쉽게 무덤 안에 묻혀있는 많은 문화유산을 손에 넣을 수 있었다고 합니다. 그리고 그 증거로 제시되는 사실이, **'고려장이라는 풍습에 대해 서술한 책 두 권 모두가 일본인 혹은 조선총독부에 의해 쓰여진 책이다'**라는 사실입니다. 

어떻게 생각하시나요? 위에서 언급한 제국주의 일제 설이 가장 설득력있는 주장이긴 하지만, 고려장 분야는 아직 학자들의 연구가 활발하지 않아 제대로 된 가설로 받아들여지고 있지는 않다고 합니다. 그 유래가 어디이든간에, 저는 **'고려장이라는 끔찍한 풍습은 고려에 없었다.'**라는 것만은 진심으로 믿고 싶습니다. 감사합니다^^

今日は人々に'高麗の風習の一つ'として知られている**'高麗葬（コリョジャン）'**についてご紹介させていただきます~^^高麗葬は、だいたい'高麗で過ごした葬儀'または'老いた両親を山に運び捨てること'という二つの意味があります。 韓国で国語と歴史教育を通して学んだ高麗葬の概念は、後者にさらに近いでしょうね。 

私の記憶が正しければ、、高麗葬は、かつて、我々が貧乏だった時代、親が70歳になると、年老いて衰弱して、ご飯だけを潰している存在と考えられ、口を一つでも減らし、貧困から抜け出すために、親を山に捨てたりする風習だったと学校教育を通して学んだ記憶があります。

ところでみなさん、**高麗葬が実際は、高麗で行われていなかった可能性が大きい**ということ、ご存知でしたか? 高麗時代の二大歴史書である高麗史と高麗史節要を見ると、両方とも高麗葬が行われてたという話を見つけることができないそうです。 また、仏教を国家宗教としており、親孝行を重視していた高麗社会で親を山に捨てるという概念が理屈に合うのかとも思われますね。 それでは'高麗葬'という風習は一体どこで生まれてきたのか? という疑問が発生するでしょう。

高麗葬の由来を調べることに先立って、高麗葬の話を簡単に説いてみます。 [昔昔ある高麗時代、ある家長が70歳になって高麗葬の時を迎えた母を背負子に背負い、山に登ります。 その後を息子が追いついてきます。 家長が母親と背負子を適当な場所に置いて涙を振り払いながら帰って行こうと思ったその瞬間,突然息子が駆けつけながら叫びます。 **"お父さん、あの背負子、持って行かなければなりません。 私が後に父を山に捨てる時使わなければならないんですもの。"**で、男ははふと悟りを得て、再び母を連れてきて亡くなるまで一生奉養しました。]

少し戯画化したようだが、高麗葬のメインストーリーと教訓は大まかにこんな感じです。 ところが面白いのは、中国の歴史書である'ヒョジャチョン(孝子傳)'にもこれと似たような話が登場するという点です。 そしてヒョジャチョンに出てくる話と高麗葬話の唯一の違いは'背負子'が'車'に変わっているということ、だたひとつと言われています。 それで高麗葬の話の由来は孝子傳だという推測が最も大きな説得力を得ています。 

中国の'親山に捨てる'ストーリーが高麗葬に変化して韓国にやってきた原因として、様々な仮説が提起されていますが、最も力を得ている説は、**'帝国主義日本の墓暴き**(私がネーミングしましたものです)'です。 日帝強占期、日帝は朝鮮の文化遺産を略奪しようと思いました。 ところが問題は、多くの文化遺産が墓の中に一緒に埋められているという点でした。 日帝は朝鮮の民衆に文化遺産盗掘をさせ、墓を掘り出すことを注文したが、儒教文化によって支配されていた朝鮮で誰かの墓を掘るということは冒涜に該当することでした。

その時、日本は一つの知恵を思い出しました。 高麗葬の話を作りだし、その墓に埋葬されてるのは'親を捨てた不届きなやつだ'と嘘をつき、墓を掘り出してもいい、という合理的な口実を提供したのです。 かわいそうにも、朝鮮民衆らはそういった話をすっかり信じて(信じなくてもどうせ他の方法で、お墓を掘り出させた可能性があったと思いますが、とにかく）、多くの墓が盗掘でき、日本は簡単に墓の中に埋もれている多くの文化遺産を手に入れられたと言われています。 そしてその証拠として提示される事実が、**'高麗葬という風習について叙述した本二冊全部が日本人あるいは朝鮮総督府によって書かれた本だ'**ということです。 

どう思いますか? 上で言及した帝国主義日本の植民地盗掘説が最も説得力のある主張ではあるが、高麗葬という分野はまだ学者たちの研究が活発ではなく、まともな仮説として受け止められてはいないようです。 その由来がどこであろうと、私は'高麗葬という残酷な風習は高麗になかった。'ってことだけは本気で信じたいです。 ありがとうございます＾＾。
