A good advertisement is one which sells the product without drawing attention to itself. - David Ogilvy

Advertisement is actually something nobody wants but everybody needs.

One of the biggest issues advertisers have to deal with in social media networks is their bad reputation with regards to data abuse.

Since data in blockchain based environments doesn't belong to anybody but the owners themselves, it actually can't be abused. Thus there might be a way to enable advertisement in such eco-systems without needing to challenge privacy at all.

Here's why I believe advertisement can bring true value to blockchain based networks!

@surfermarly promoting her surf equipment

Where does the value come from?

Isn't that on of the most fascinating questions in crypto markets?

Inspired by @clayboyn's recent article ONO: Where does the money come from?, I'd like to open a discussion about ways to integrate advertisement in tokenized social media dApps.

@connecteconomy commented on @clayboyn's article and brought up a quite interesting thought in that context:

I think it's great to be able to opt in and out for advertisement, if we get rewarded for them. But I think we should be rewarded for watching them. And if we want an ad free experience, we just opt out and get no rewards. So if I get paid by an advertiser for placing ads on my profile, then you as a viewer/follower should get paid for the same ad, if you see it in your feed. Right? At least I would find that fair.

Fully agreed, Anja! It's not only fair, it's ingenious.

The great benefit of decentralized eco-systems is that both the creators and the consumers can be rewarded for their contribution (time).

While content creators offer value providing ad space, curators contribute generating the related ad impressions.

Affiliate marketing - if smartly implemented - is able to provide value for both creators and curators!

Bloggers are storytellers, and so are smart advertisers.

Decentralization doesn't enable certain leverages and impede others, it rather offers all options to decide on.

Those who neither want to integrate ads in their own blogs nor perceive it in other's, may simply opt out. Yet, those who decide on participating in this additional value creation process, may opt for it.

During the first Steemfest event in November 2016, Ned Scott (CEO Steemit, Inc) mentioned that he was considering advertisement as a future plan for the Steem eco-system. He specifically mentioned the option to sell one's attention to advertisers and like that turn the common eco-systems in centralized networks upside-down.

Our attention is what is valuable. So with steemit going forward we're going to be able to use this platform and say: If you want my attention, mister advertiser or mister person-with-a-product-or-service, if you want my attention then you can pay for it! That will help to bootstrap the currency and bring more value into our pockets. - Ned Scott (Amsterdam, 2016)

I've quoted this key note so often that I almost know it off pat :-)

From my personal point of view, it was your best speech ever, @ned. It was visionary, brave, enthusiastic and mind-blowing.

I think your idea is still 100% zeitgeisty, Ned.

Why shouldn't my followers appreciate to know where I purchased a certain product that made my surf experiences even more complete?

Marketing, product placement and advertisment don't have to necessarily be annoying. They can provide real value both to advertisers and consumers.

It can be done with style.

Honestly, I've done so much product placement in my Steem blog already. I don't even remember all the brands. The only problem is that I never got paid for it :-)

Tokenized dApps have the great chance to finally implement advertisement in a fair way. The ad space we offer to present advertisement and the attention we spend consuming it, can now be compensated.

If this business model not going to be a priority for Steemit anymore, then maybe other networks will discover its great potential. The founders of ONO - the first social media dApp to be launched on EOS -, for instance, believe in the opportunity of advertisement:

Advertising is the most direct “attention economy” embodiment for the ONO social media network.

For further details on ONO's advertisement strategy, please consider the ONO Whitepaper Chapter 5. The ONO app was launched on the 15th of April for the Chinese market and is supposed to be available for English speaking users in May.

Now do you believe in the value creation through advertisement?

I'd love to read your opinion in the comments!

Much love,
Marly -

Thanks for your valuable time!
This blog was launched at the end of July 2016
aiming to provide stories for open-minded
people who enjoy living on the edge of their lives,
stepping out of comfort zones, going on adventure,
doing extreme sports and embracing the new.
Welcome to the too-much-energy-blog!

PS: Decentralization gives power back to the people!

Original content.
