Every minute is sacred and special. Today we are doing a fun and interesting activity with an egg and vinegar. # The Shell-less egg. On the outer skirts of town lived an old man, Mr Derricks. He was a farmer. Well, most farmers farm with sheep or cows, but he farmed with chickens. He had a lot of different types of chickens, but one type of chicken laid a lot of eggs. He put them in a chicken coop, a very big one he built himself. https://i.ytimg.com/vi/xLX6LFW2n3c/maxresdefault.jpg [Image Source](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/xLX6LFW2n3c/maxresdefault.jpg) One day he went in with his weaved basket to fetch all the eggs laid throughout the night. Under the last hen he found something strange. An egg without a shell. This little egg was kept in his house for a few days, while Mr Derricks was researching how this is possible. He contacted the veterinarian who told him that the shell didn't develop because their was no calcium. Interesting. http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5128/5227602529_bed6fbc6cc.jpg [Image Source](http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5128/5227602529_bed6fbc6cc.jpg) # What you will need? 1. 500 ml mason jar with its lid and ring. 2. White vinegar 3. Egg (doesn't need to be a fresh egg, preferably an older egg.) # Instructions 1. Place the egg in the jar. 2. Fill halve of the jar with the vinegar. Important: Do not fill to the top or the jar will burst. 3. Cover the jar, not to tight, so that the gas can escape from the jar. 4. Leave the egg for about two days. 5. Take the egg from the jar and rinse off with water. https://premeditatedleftovers.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Disappearing-Egg-Activity-let-egg-sit-in-the-jar.jpg [Image Source](https://premeditatedleftovers.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Disappearing-Egg-Activity-let-egg-sit-in-the-jar.jpg) # What is the science behind this activity? Egg shells contain calcium carbonate which dissolves in the acidic vinegar which then will produce calcium ions and carbon dioxide gas. The calcium ions stays dissolved in the vinegar. The carbon dioxide produces bubbles which will be seen while the egg dissolves.
[](https://steemit.com/created/teamsouthafrica) Team South Africa banner designed by @bearone
