It has been an interesting few days on Hive, and I thought I would mention a couple aspects that came up, so that perhaps people can discuss them underneath in the comments section.

# Automated posting

It actually started with a friend mentioning a post by someone who was complaining about scheduling several days of posts and then the automation failing. Yes, this is annoying, but not because of the scheduling, but because people who do this are obviously not engaged. And, while scheduling is possibly necessary at times, what it does is shoes that a person doesn't care that much about being relevant to the community, because they are looking so far into the future. For some kinds of content it might be suitable, but even if it posts, if someone isn't checking what they post regularly, it means that they aren't looking to engage either. 

There are also risks, similar to what happened a few weeks ago regarding [Sandra Bullock](https://metro.co.uk/2023/08/11/sandra-bullocks-split-reported-by-magazine-after-partners-death-19318030/) whose husband died, six days *before* that cover was released. 

# Shitposting

Then, another friend brought to my attention a user who has been around since 2016, shitposting for reward. Now, over the years I haven't been a fan of shitposting per se and there should be some room for it from time to time, but also, it seems that the same user just doesn't give a fuck about the community at all, so I commented and asked them if they had given up putting any effort in at all. However, another very experienced (and staked) user called me out saying that not every post need be full of text. *Fair enough.*

# No comments

However, this person, who had seven posts in the last week, also had *zero comments* in the same week. Even to the *very few people* who had dropped some kind of message on their posts, there was still no replies. There is "shitposting" and then there are just *shit people.* Based on their replies, I think this person might fall into the latter category.

# Selling out

A new word. I am not hip to all the vocabulary of the young and useless today, but I learned something from one of them. The term "Jeet"

This person is one of them. They have literally taken out *everything* of the considerable amount they have earned, which means they haven't given much back. Don't get me wrong, selling some HIVE is okay, but *fuck those* who sell everything they get. 

As someone who has earned a fair bit through posting myself, I am also a proud *bagholder* of HIVE and have also earned a bit through curation. The thing with earning through curation is that some percentage of that goes to the vote receiver as posting rewards. Over about the last 2 or 3 years it has been 50/50, but before that curation was 25%, with the author getting 75% - this is why so many were self voting.

They can't support the topics they care about, or the people who have helped them. they can't give anything to a new user and they can't support a proposal in the DAO - which is possibly a good thing. Because,

# The Entitled

For those who are only looking to extract all they can get, no matter what the markets are doing, *you do you.* But, you are not entitled to anything. It doesn't matter if you have been here since 2016, it doesn't matter if your mommy thinks you are pretty, no one is entitled to anything, other than what the code allows them at any given point in time. 

For instance, with the current code I know I am able to earn around about "x-amount" through curation and I know I can vote on witnesses and proposals using that stake to influence outcomes in some way. However, this comes at a cost, because powering up hive and locking it away means losing the opportunity to sell it. The Jeets don't have to worry about this risk, because they have no HIVE. 

> They take no responsibility.

And, if they don't want to take any responsibility for the outcomes of the platform and the community, and don't give a shit about other members of the community, why the fuck would we be rewarding them? Especially for *shit content.* 

# The Joy of Hive


Hive is bloody awesome, but it is also far from perfect. This imperfection means there is a large amount of potential to develop, but it also means that there is a lot of potential for people to take advantage of others. Whenever there is some kind of money involved, there are going to be people who are willing to do something to gain access to it. And, unless there is pushback against the behaviors we don't want to see, they will persist. Worse, if we are rewarding behaviors we don't want to see, we are incentivizing them and increasing the chance of more. 

These people might love taking advantage of the community, but should they get away with it, especially when they have so much disdain for the community members themselves? 

> I don't think so. 

But, I might be in the minority. I often am.

# What are your thoughts?

As said, Hive is far from perfect, but I do think that we are heading (slowly) in a better direction. If we want to build a strong and valuable community, we have to be somewhat serious about what that actually requires. It doesn't mean that all shitposting is bad, but when it is coming from people who are intentionally taking advantage at the expense of the community with no intention of ever helping anyone else, and aren't even willing to put a little effort into adding something useful...
