One of the most exciting aspects of the Manna project is that it removes the debate about government, tax dollars, and waiting around for politician to get their heads out of their you know what. The basic income idea is supported by many yet the discussion always turns to how to pay for it. In the end, that is never an easy answer since it usually means putting government right in the middle of it. We saw a similar thing with Carbon Tax Credits. Even the right wing politician James Baker came out in support of a citizen's dividend paid for by using money charged by those companies who emit a large amount of CO2. Of course, to get something like this passed through the United States Congress (and some other countries) would be a nightmare. Now we see blockchain and cryptocurrency stepping in. IBM is very active in the blockchain world. It is their goal to be one of the leading companies in this industry. One thing they really are focused upon is setting up companies with private blockchains. While these have their uses depending upon the industry and the focus of the blockchain, they cannot rival the public ones. Fortunately, for IBM, they are aware of this while having a relationship with Stellar. IBM and Veridium teamed up tokenize carbon credits. The idea is nothing new since 3rd party carbon credits are around for a while yet it does not offer what cryptocurrency does. >Third-party carbon credits have existed for some time, but they’re difficult to value and hold on a traditional balance sheet. The verde token, in contrast, is fungible and can be redeemed and traded on the public Stellar network, removing friction and opacity from the carbon credit supply chain. Basically, blockchain technology coupled with cryptocurrency is taking on the abuse of the environment. I do not know how this project will fare long-term but it is good to see. This just shows one of the many uses. One thing in particular caught my attention. >“By using a public, permissioned blockchain network, we can help Veridium create a new sustainable marketplace that is good for business and good for the world,” said Bridget van Kralingen, senior vice president of IBM’s industry platforms and blockchain division. >“This is a great example of how industries are being reinvented by blockchain, in this case establishing a far more efficient and transparent approach to carbon accounting and offsetting that will empower individuals and companies to play a role in improving our environment,” she concluded. https://www.ccn.com/ibm-to-issue-cryptocurrency-token-on-stellar-blockchain/ It is interesting to see a ranking IBM member sharing why public blockchain offers more benefits. Since IBM tends to lean toward private ones, this is a huge uplift. Public blockchains are the revolutionary force. They allow for anyone, company or individual, to create applications to be used on the blockchain. Some create social media games while others take on climate change. I hypothesize we are going to see a lot more deals like this over the next couple years. At present, the control mechanisms are trying to retain it by embracing blockchain. Nevertheless, to maintain control, they cannot put everything out there for anyone to build upon. This means they opt for the private route which, while providing models of efficiency, is not the revolutionary technology that it is meant to be. Of course, someone like Wal-Mart is not interested in putting their entire supply chain on a public network. So, there are some applicable uses for private chains. Thousands of new projects are undertaken around the world each day with regard to blockchain. The industry is really moving forward at a rapid pace. 2018, so far, witnessed an explosion in this arena. While this is not reflected in the price of cryptocurrencies, it does show how valuable the technology is. This is why I believe we are at the beginning of the opportunity of a lifetime. Never before have we seen something so powerful that is, in so many ways, available to for the masses to participate in. Hang on, it is going to be a wild ride.
