Star Wars Technology In Today's World! - Future Tech - Part 23.
# From the imagination of sci-fi writers, the future can be predicted and that same technology we read about or see on the silver screen may one day become a reality.

### While Star Trek dominated the small screen in the 60's, in the late 70's Star Wars dominated the big screen. Its a cliché sci-fi battle that wages on till this day, with each side having its own unique take on space travel and the science behind it.

Some of the technology that we have today is all thanks to the imagination of Sci-fi writers. Space stations, landing on the moon, mobile phones, tablets, flat screen displays, touch screen, storage devices that hold unimaginable amounts of data, laser based weaponry, propulsion technologies to name but a few advancements that took their cue from Science fiction.
With Star Wars being such a huge and successful franchise, I decided to take a look at some of the technology that can be found in the films and Shows and see if some of it is available today, or soon be available within the next few years.

### Land Speeders.
When the first land speeder was seen in the 1977 film, people thought it was amazing that a craft could float above the ground. Many writers have envisioned flying cars since the turn of the century, but unfortunately it would take a few more decades before we would see such a craft for personal use.
At present, there are 19 companies working on, designing and testing a personal flying car/helicopter/drone/plane that you could buy for your own personal use so you don't have to get stuck in rush hour.
Uber has plans to introduce a hybrid car/drone into 3 of the largest cities around the world by 2020 and have a governmental contract with NASA who will be designing the Air Traffic control systems for Uber, and there are rumours floating about the internet that these new ''Sky Taxi's'' will be autonomous too. So keep your eye on the sky in 2020 and see if flying cars can become a reality.

### Robots and Androids.
It wouldn't be Star Wars if there was no robots or Androids. R2D2 and C3PO are probably more well known throughout the world than some of the biggest celebrities. Robots are a standard feature in the majority of Star Wars media.
We may not have androids that are capable of over 6 million forms of communication but we have had robotic machines build our cars and many other items we have today, and we can also buy Robot Toys with built in, very basic ai for the past decade or so. But today we are starting to see the emergence of advanced Artificial Intelligence within an Android body.
Sophia by Hanson Robotics, is a constantly evolving android who is, for the best part, able to think for herself and is even known to tell a joke from time to time about her dominating the world.
Although she is a long way off passing a Turing test, the proof of concept is there, she has the ability to recognize peoples faces and their voice, can hold a good conversation and is designed to get smarter with her experiences. She is also the first android to be granted a citizenship and be treated as an equal.
So it maybe a while before we can have our own androids to speak to moisture evaporators, but Basic robotic Toys and even some adult versions like ASIMO from Honda are there on the market today.

### Battle Droids.
In the 3 Prequel movies, episodes 1, 2 and 3, Battle droids are made on mass for one purpose, to go to war and do battle.
The Military establishment around the world have been investing millions upon millions into research and development of a robot that could replace humans on the battlefield one day. Although we are a long way from that, we have seen an increased presence of military robots and remote controlled ones in the field.
It all started with a remote controlled car with a camera on top that helped with search and rescue over 30 years ago, today though, that remote controlled car is now fitted with tracks, armour plating and dependant on the situation, could have an arm attached for bomb disposal like Talon, or fitted with a gun or rocket launcher such as the MAARS or Gladiator.
If you want an upright bipedal robot like the Trade Federations, Russia already has the answer with the FEDOR. It is able to shoot a multitude of different weapons, can walk, run, drive, fight, get up if knocked over, its armour plated and fully autonomous or can be controlled via remote. Is this what future warfare is going to look like?

### Holograms.
''Help me Obi One, You're my only hope'' is the most iconic line in Star Wars next to ''No, I am your farther'' but the line spoken by Leia comes from a holographic projection, and holograms such as this can be seen in every film to date.
Holograms have come a long way from the shiny sticker on the side of VHS tapes. There are numerous companies out there that have produced holograms, some of them that seem to float in mid air such as what wee see in the movies.
The technology isn't quite at the mainstream level yet, but it has been duplicated to a good degree. Michel Jackson, Dio and 2Pac have all been dead for years, yet somehow have risen from the grave and performed on stage once again thanks to how detailed holography is getting.
Companies such as Euclideon have created what they are calling the Holotable, similar to the table seen on the Millennium Falcon where Chewbacca's favourite game is. The Holotable creates full 3D images you can walk around with the aid of some glasses. It is used for architectural and design work, but if you have the money. You can order one today.

Even though we are a very long way of recreating a light sabre or hyperdrive, it still hasn't deterred researchers from trying to create the seemingly impossible. After all, it wasn't that long ago that some technology we have today was seen to be Science fiction, but thanks to the imagination of a few scientists, it is now Science Fact.

Thanks for reading.
