There's a lot happening in today's Scripture passage. Jesus' teachings and miracles are awesome, but they're awesome, but they're just frosting on the cake. What's the main reason for Jesus' leaving the good times in heaven and slumming it down here on earth? He explains that He's going to die: "the hour has come." In fact He makes it painfully clear how important this dying business is: " It was for this very reason I came"(John 12:27). Then Jesus says:"Father, glorify your name!" After Jesus speaks, the crowd suddenly hears from heaven the voice of God the Father praising His Son. Not your everyday occurrence, and most people are pretty impressed. But of course there's always trying to and give God's miracle a "natural " explanation. "Must've been thunder. Yeah, yeah, that's it. It was , uh , thunder." of course, hearing thunder boom out a complete sentence would, in itself , be quite a miracle:"I have glorified it, and will glorify it again. "(for the record , this is the third tine people have heard God talk to His Son. The other times were when Jesus was baptized {Luke 9:35}.) and when three dead- and- gone Old Testament heroes appeared beside Him on a mountain top{Luke 9:35}.) You have to give total surrender to God. If you want to live you have to die. The man who loves loves hi life will lose it, while the man who hates his life in this in this world will keep it for life everlasting.
