An anguished journey through the psychopathologies of the human being, when viewed with affection and interest. That's how I can describe this fantastic album by the band/person **Youth Lagoon**. I know little now, but I didn't know anything when I listened carefully for the first time. The album starts quite intense in the second track Mute, where the musical pattern that is observed is something indie and electronic, creative and psychedelic in the opening verses. A little reminiscent of **MGMT** and **Of Montreal**, but soon the sound changes, and the pre-chorus base melody can be described as “scattered and rusty abandoned playground scales being played like samplers, a sense of paranoia, eagerness to spin in the toys and a cozy epiphany that forms in the chest”. Everything sounds distorted and confused, but perfectly melodic, in a really pop feel, amidst agonizing and pleasurable sounds.

When I stopped to realize the power of this song, I automatically thought of its composer, and that maybe he is a person with a mind quite affected by reality. Because I dare say that I have never seen a mental problem so well controlled and managed in the form of music. Much of Youth Lagoon's work goes back to **Daniel Johnston**, both for the voice and the constant lo-fi feel on the album, and for the main theme of this album. The difference is that the genius Johnston had no control over his paranoia and anguish and always proved to be very fragile, just expressing in a crude and crude way everything that came out of his mind and heart. Maybe Youth Lagoon's lead boy isn't all crazy as he sounds, but I feel a deep sincerity in his music. Even because I can't get all the details of the lyrics and I didn't have time to translate them. What I feel is that there is an organized paranoia reverted to music. There are countless good tracks: *Attic Doctor, Pelican Man, Dropla* (one of the greatest hits on the album, which in my view is already huge just for the chorus "*we will never die*", which repeated so many times brings the uncontrolled insistence of an autistic child pouring out a mantra against the logic of the external world that disturbs you), among others.

The album wanders between psychological disturbances side by side with a layer of spirituality and interests beyond matter, there is an extreme evolution from the first album to this one, initially Youth Lagoon just featured subtle alternative pop with good ideas and an intimate, dark feel, now sad pulling towards the happy indie feeling of almost dream, now to the sadness already quite similar to the bitter singing of Daniel Johnston, now, light years ahead of the previous album, it seems to follow this path, Youth Lagoon still will grow a lot in quality and creativity, and with Wondrous Bughouse it has already reached where few have gone and is for me at the top of current psychedelic music, precisely because I cross it with a lack of interest in sounding high, it's much more dangerous, it's mentally ill instead of a druggie. I believe this boy goes far.

Uma viagem angustiosa pelas psicopatologias do ser humano, quando vistas com carinho e interesse. É assim que posso descrever este álbum fantástico da banda/pessoa Youth Lagoon. Pouco sei ainda agora, mas nada sabia ao ouvi-lo com atenção pela primeira vez. O álbum já começa bastante intenso na segunda faixa Mute, onde o padrão musical que se observa é algo de indie e eletrônico, criativo e psicodélico nos versos iniciais. Lembrando um pouco de MGMT e Of Montreal, mas logo o som se transforma, e a melodia base do pré-refrão pode ser descrita como “balanças de um parquinho abandonado e enferrujado sendo tocadas como samplers, uma sensação de paranoia, ânsia de girar nos brinquedos e uma epifania aconchegante que vai se formando no peito”. 

Tudo soa distorcido e confuso, mas perfeitamente melódico, numa pegada realmente pop, em meio a sons agoniantes e prazerosos. Quando parei para perceber o poder dessa musica, automaticamente pensei em seu compositor, e que talvez seja uma pessoa com uma mente bastante afetada pela realidade. Porque arrisco dizer que jamais vi um problema mental tão bem controlado e conduzido em forma de música. Muito do trabalho de Youth Lagoon remete a Daniel Johnston, tanto pela voz e pela sensação lo-fi constante no álbum, quanto pela temática principal deste álbum. A diferença é que o gênio Johnston não tinha controle algum sobre suas paranoias e angustias e sempre se mostrou muito frágil, apenas exprimindo de forma bruta e tosca tudo que saía de sua mente e coração. 

Talvez o rapaz líder do Youth Lagoon não seja de toda loucura que aparenta, mas sinto uma sinceridade profunda na sua música. Até por que não consigo pegar todos os detalhes da letra e não tive tempo de traduzi-las. O que sinto é que ali se encontra uma paranoia organizada e revertida em música. São inúmeras faixas boas: Attic Doctor, Pelican Man, Dropla (um dos grandes hits do álbum, que ao meu ver já é imensa só pelo refrão “we will never die”, que repetido tantas vezes traz a insistência incontrolada de uma criança autista despejando um mantra contra a lógica do mundo externo que lhe perturba), entre outras.  

O álbum vaga entre os distúrbios psicológicos lado a lado com uma camada de espiritualidade e interesses além da matéria, existe uma extrema evolução do primeiro álbum para este, inicialmente Youth Lagoon apresentava apenas um sutil pop alternativo com boas ideias e uma sensação intimista e soturna, ora triste puxando para a sensação alegre indie de quase sonho, ora para a tristeza já bastante semelhante ao canto amargurado de Daniel Johnston, agora, anos-luz a frente do álbum anterior, ao que tudo indica se seguir por este caminho, Youth Lagoon ainda irá crescer muito em qualidade e criatividade, sendo que, com Wondrous Bughouse já chegou aonde poucos chegaram e está para mim no topo da atual musica psicodélica, exatamente por atravessa-la com um desinteresse em parecer chapadão, é muito mais perigoso, é doente mental ao invés de zé droguinha. Creio que esse rapaz vai longe.
