Spring time on the water around Vancouver Island
Summer is only just around the corner for the northern hemisphere, which for me has always meant whale watching time. As my job for the past 6 years has been operating logisitics, operations and driving tours for a company that runs out of Victoria, BC on Vancouver Island.

However, this time of year is pretty awesome to be on the water. It is the best time to hang out with Bigg’s Orca or Transients Killer Whales - the mammal eating orca!! My favourites. The reason is the salmon haven’t really started running yet into the San Juan and Gulf Islands, so as a result the Resident orca that hunt the salmon haven’t really came in yet and ‘set up shop’ for the summer. When they aren’t around the other ecotype - Bigg’s orca come in and hunt the area extensively, which is **AWESOME!!!**

It is quite the amazing sight to see these huge apex predators gentling rip apart a seal or a smaller baleen whale - unless you really, really like seals then I guarantee you won’t enjoy the interaction.
