Well, the idea is that commenting adds value to original content and should be compensated as well. I'm not sure that the formula is necessarily optimal, but it seems like the right idea in general.

Presumably over time your commenting will boost your posts (people see your comments, like them, follow you, read your main posts) and vice versa.
