*The first installment of Kingdom Under Fire was released in 2001 and belonged only to the real-time strategy genre. It was a time when RTS lovers - real time strategy - had a choice with titans like Starcraft, Age of Empires and the imminent and at the same time Warcraft 3 - which would culminate what became a golden age for PC-strategy lovers. It was in the sixth generation of consoles when the development study of the South Korean title, Phantagram, took advantage of the power of the first Xbox to make the leap to a new genre in which they sought to position themselves as pioneers; a hybrid that brought together the tactical elements of the RTS titles with the spectacular mass battles of the third-person hack’n’slash that Dynasty Warriors 2 already looked in the same year 2000.*

*This second installment known as Kingdom Under Fire: The Crusaders would arrive in 2004 and allowed us to directly control a main character as a hero - RPG elements included - in charge of directing small armies in real time and in full combat. These armies were composed of different types of units with different characteristics and functions on the battlefield, which added to the intense combat in the third person and the hours of content offered by the title served to make this sequel rise to the position of being a of the most attractive proposals in the strategy genre during the first steps of the Microsoft console.*

Starting the MMO adventure

*Kingdom Under Fire 2 begins by introducing us in the inert parameters to the MMORPG genre. The first thing we will have to do is choose a class of the five available that can be played at the moment. The first of these is the Gunslinger or Gunman, which is characterized by its versatility and ability to break enemy lines by using a sword and its two guns. The next class is known as Spellsword, and it is a sorceress of the magic of ice and light that armed with a sword and a scepter will be capable of inflicting large amounts of damage in area to enemies.*

A genre that weighs more than the rest

*With our avatar created, the game moves us directly to the defense of a fortress in which we will take our first steps as a tutorial. This is where the game's history is presented, and the basic controls of both the main character and the skills of the class we have chosen are explained to us. The first contact with the enemy troops that invade the castle makes us think quickly of the genus musou; not only because of the number of enemy troops on the screen that will fall before our feet with a couple of basic attacks, but also because of the pompous effects of the spells or the simple artificial intelligence that the characters not controlled by players will wear. It does not reach the level of feeling like a true hack’slash for obvious reasons and limitations, but it complies remarkably.*

Changing game with one key

*The icing on the cake lies in the well-known instance missions that serve as the main core that defines both the game and its endgame. It is in these missions that the title finally allows us to fully enjoy its potential with the inclusion of elements of the strategy genre in real time such as those seen in the legendary Total War saga. It is a type of “dungeons” in which you can gather from 1 to 4 players and in which you will mainly have to besiege castles or defend them in a group way. In fact, each player has his own troops to lead, and it is from the combination of these where the full potential of the game resides. Although it is also true that it is possible to play these missions individually if we have enough skill.*

***Blueside and Gameforge have managed to produce a title that meets their proposal and that does not fool the player at any time. It does so by merging three very differentiated genres that end up conjugated in a very remarkable way despite the exhaustion of some elements of the MMO formula. Kingdom Under Fire 2 has finally arrived ten years later than expected, but at least it does and in a fairly consistent way. Knowing how to understand how buyers think, KUF2 has been redesigned for sale in the western market with a buy-to-play model that moves away with a more or less firm step from the microtransactions that plague the Asian video game market.***
