STOP Giving Me Mandarin Oranges
Dear all Steemit member,

I am writing this article coming from a perspective of charity and donation.

However, let me share with you how the idea of this article come about:

During Chinese New Year, my wife was sick and she is not suppose to take Mandarin Oranges. So while there are some Mandarin Oranges in the fridge, I am the only one eating and clearing them. As some of the Mandarin Oranges become dry and spoil, I tend to take 2-3 Mandarin Oranges a day before all of them turn bad. One day when I open the fridge I saw there are more Mandarin Oranges. In my mind, I am thinking like who the hell give us Mandarin Oranges again.

**Mandarin Oranges**
Back to the topic, I had visited a few orphanages and old folks home last year before Chinese New Year on behalf of my company. Our role are to give out Mandarin Oranges to everyone in the homes. These Mandarin Oranges are the balance that the company have after giving out to each and every staffs during the Pre-Chinese New Year Annual Dinner. Our superior only allocate one day for us to give out all the oranges.

The whole department divided into 3 teams, and we went to about 8 homes to give out the oranges. Each homes ended with more than 5 boxes of Mandarin Oranges and more. After talking to the caretaker of the home, I found out that they receive tons of Mandarin Oranges every year from different corporate, without concerning whether they require it or not. Hence causing a lot of wastage as they threw away most of the Mandarin Oranges as they turn back.

Corporate come and give the Mandarin Oranges for the sake of getting a nice article on their Corporate Social Responsibility Report. They went to the homes, hand over the Mandarin Oranges and take a picture and it is considered a good deed is done. But think about it, a home of 10 people, given 5 boxes of Mandarin Oranges - basically you can expect 3-4 boxes will be throw away.

**Lou Sang**
Other than that, I also have a few god-children from the homes. I brought them back to my hometown for meal during the Chinese New Year. As usual, we ordered the Lou Sang, one of the Chinese tradition food for Chinese New Year Celebration, also known as the Prosperity Toss. It is a Cantonese-style raw fish salad. It usually consists of strips of raw fish (sometimes salmon), mixed with shredded vegetables and a variety of sauces and condiments, among other ingredients.

According to the article - TOSS IT HIGHER! HERE’S ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT YEE SANG by Carrybeans, https://www.carrybeans.com/food-and-drink/yee-sang/
>Literally, yee sang or yu sheng in Mandarin means raw fish (鱼生). However, the two characters sound similar to two others with different meanings:
>
>鱼: fish (pronounced as yu)
>余: abundance (also pronounced as yu)
>
>生: raw (pronounced as sheng)
>升: increase (also pronounced as sheng)
>
>Therefore, although the phrase yu sheng means raw fish (鱼生), it can also mean ‘increase in abundance’ (余升).

While eating Lou Sang, we will toss the ingredients higher, scream out the thing we wish for the year louder wishing everyone in the family a wonderful and prosperous year ahead. We thought that this would be new for the youth but unexpectedly they can do better than you.

After talked the my god-children then we found out that they have to have meal with sponsor during Chinese New Year. The youth may have to involved in 6 functions a day, hence having 6 times of Prosperity Toss in one day. Although I, too, loves to eat the Prosperity Toss, but having 6 times a bit might cause me trauma ...

**Market Place Event**
There is another incident when I went to a event organized by a company. It was a Bazaar / Market Place for the youth form the homes to sell things as a experience for Sales and Customer Service. Hence I was there to buy some products as a support. After the event finished, few of us decided to bring the youth for dinner. We ended up in a Thai Restaurant in the mall.

While we were eating, the event organizer came to the youth and ask them to bring back all the balance of the food that cannot be sold of. It was around 7pm, when they finish their dinner and reach back to their homes, it will probably be 8pm or 9pm. By then, most of the youth in the homes will also have eaten their dinner cook by their home taker. So where will the balance food goes to? The fridge or the bin? Just because you have balance of things you cannot sell, you think that it would be beneficial for the youth. Turning the table around it also could be you wouldn't want to deal with the clearing and managing of the afterwork hence throwing the ball to another person.

Most of us want to do good. Just that sometimes it may turn out to be a Failed Help.

My take is these:
1) If you don't want something, don't just simply give it to other people.
2) ASK first if you really think that someone need it.
