### Seems that many don't know about Hive.Vote

It's a super useful tool that has been around for quite some time. It's main use is to automate the spending of your Hive Power. 

Everyone that is keeping an eye on their HP and is trying to use it as best as possible (that is to not let it sit at 100% for long periods of time) knows how difficult it can be to manage it. I have long used  [Hive.Vote](hive.vote) for this exact reason. This is a little guide to get you started in case you haven't used it before.

### Log in and set your Mana threshold

This is probably one of the most important things to configure before you even get started  setting everything up. Upon log in you will see many options to your left as seen here:

But on the right/middle you will also get to see these options. This is really useful to not let your HP get too low. If this is not set at any threshold then you could easily see your HP dwindle down to 0 if you use it too much. In other words, if you set the upvote threshold to e.g. 90% your HP will not dip below it unless you manually curate. I have personally found this threshold very useful as I still have enough HP to manually curate and it regenerates relatively fast again to a useful level.

### Curation Trail

Back to the left navigation panel. You can set curation trails as one of the first options. This is useful if you just want to put your HP to use by following someone else's upvotes. Although i would only recommend this if you really support that curator. Personally, I haven't used this much, since this doesn't give you much control over the things that are being curated. There is a list of suggested trails or you can find another one.

### Fanbase

The fanbase, i.e., a list of people you want to upvote, is one of the most useful tools imo. Here you can just enter a name and add it to your list which will receive an upvote from you.

There are a couple of important options you can configure.

- Weight: this is the voting percentage for someone's post. The higher you have this the less posts you can curate. We have around 10-12 "free votes" a day on Hive - that is it takes around 24h to regenerate 12% of your HP which equates to around that many votes. I have it relatively low (at around 20%) so I can curate more posts.
- Time: This is the amount of time in minutes that passes before you will vote on a post. Since a recent HF we have around 24h to upvote content and not get a big tax on voting late. Although it is still there to a degree since early curators do get more payouts if the post does well. For that reason I would leave it at 0 minutes.

- Limits: You can configure the weekly and daily limits. For me it makes sense to leave this at 7 and 1 respectively. So a "fan" will receive 1 vote per day which seems like a good balance, especially if you also want to pass out votes to others.

### Conclusion

I hope some will find this little guide helpful! I also hope more will start using it since I am sure many don't manage their HP too well. If you leave the Mana threshold relatively high (90%+) there is also enough HP left for manual curation, giving you the best of both worlds.
