It’s always good to be good. There’s no other way to say it or go around it. Last week Sunday, I didn’t go to church. I was a little indisposed. Besides, I had to attend to those who came to work in our garden. I had employed the services of an Aboki to help make some ridges and, at the same time, assist with planting and cultivation. As I started to feel a little better that Sunday, I had to supervise their work and pay attention to every single detail. However, this Sunday was quite different, as I made up my mind to attend church service. I always miss it whenever I’m unable to attend. It feels as if some part of me is missing. I really love worshipping with the congregation, especially in my own church; we feel like a family. Even though I didn’t get to church as early as I had planned (Sunday school usually starts by 8 a.m.), I didn’t arrive until around 9:30 a.m. Typically, the service ends at most by 12 p.m., but on a normal day, it wraps up around 11:30 a.m.; unless it’s the first Sunday, which tends to last longer because of the thanksgiving service. Today felt different, though. As the service progressed and we were approaching closing time, I noticed people trooping in around 11 a.m. I was surprised and wondered, What’s going on?" " Where’s all this crowd coming from? It was later I realized that a member of our church was celebrating his 80th birthday. The people who came in large numbers were his family members, relatives, and some church members from other parishes who came to grace the occasion and celebrate him. He is a devoted Christian who attends almost every service, including midweek ones, more faithfully than many of us youth, myself included. He is a man of letters to the core: learned, yet always willing to learn from others. He never looks down on anyone. Interestingly, he was a police officer, and you know how some officers can be, but this man stood out. He is a true gentleman who never compromises his values, no matter what. He’s always willing to do the work of the Lord. From the little time I’ve known him, he’s been down to earth and ever ready to help. It was no surprise to hear the church members sing his praises during the goodwill messages.
