No matter which skillset it is... Practice will be the barrier of entry. If practice is so important, then we should have a definitionfor it. What's your definition? **"To repetitively do something."** So you gave me 4 words. "What do you think?" ***Eh...*** "Okay so what's your definition smart guy?" **Rewire the nervous system.** I believe these 4 words gives a more concrete understanding. Not to say that your definition was misguided. However, we have to understand a deeper nuance. [Image source](https://i.ytimg.com/vi/tDFiYeCKcBo/maxresdefault.jpg) **Practice** ***is the act of turning a trained act into an instinct.*** And in order to do that: ***we need to do the task mindfully before we can do it mindlessly.*** Key word is: **before.** If we try to do the task mindlessly from the get go, then we are setting ourselves up for failure. And that's how many of us approach practicing. When you simply value repetition first, that can have you undermining the mind. If you are physically there in practice session, but the mind is in Disneyland, then the session becomes much **less effective.** When we include the definition of the nervous system, things change. Idk about you... but the phrase 'nervous system' seems like an important phrase to me. The nervous system consists of: **Central:** brain & spine **Peripheral:** nerves (sensory & motor) We are information beings. Constantly passing information from one end to the next. "Do I need to learn anything in particular to rewire the nervous system?" Well, how about you take a walk down memory lane? There have been plenty of times in our lives when we rewired ourselves internally. When we learned to brush our teeth. Type. Drive... And learn anything. Anytime we learn something with our mind being present, we automatically fire new connections in our brain. The study of neuroplasticity has been showing that the brain is not fixed for life. It's capable of being molded like play doh. When we make the 'rewire our nervous system' definition the centerfold.... that's when repetition is a byproduct. But this is not mindless repetitions. ***It's the mindful repetition.*** Depending on how high the stakes are, we will be forced into a mindful mode. **Example:** ***Brushing our teeth = Low Stake*** Therefore, we are given more freedom to be mindless. ***Learning to drive = High Stake*** Therefore, we are given less freedom to be mindless. How can we increase the level of presence for tasks that seem low stake? Like writing. It's easy to become mindless because you technically will not die if you allow yourself to be mindless. **In cases like this, the timer is the best friend.** Something about a timer counting down the time simulates the effects of a HIGH STAKE situation out of a low stake one. With this renewed narrative, it's much easier to place yourself in a state of a mindful attitude. And then repetitively rewire the nervous system. Remember, the goal is to turn a trained act to an instinct. No matter if it's with a speech, listening, and writing skills. A lot of the times, our behavior sharpens when we fix our definitions. So try out the 4 new words yourself: **Rewire the nervous system.** See if it sharpens your movements & places you in the high stakes environment.
