<b><i>Hi, my dear Hive travellers!</i></b>

Today I want to share with you my impressions and photos of my trip to magical Romania. This was our last trip together with my daughter before the war. Today, returning to these photographs, I remember this wonderful trip. 

One of the points of our trip was Peles Castle. After standing in a huge queue, we finally got inside and found ourselves in a fairy tale about princesses and princes! During this time, I managed to understand that it is impossible to take pictures inside the castle without special permission. A few euros - and the magic ticket is already attached to my blouse and I took out my camera. I took a lot of interior photos.

The interior of the castle was breathtaking. The walls were richly decorated with paintings and sculptures, and the furniture was exquisitely crafted. Everywhere I looked there was something new to admire. I think this is the best way to understand what the life of that time was like.

And of course, one cannot fail to mention the magnificent stained-glass windows of Peles Castle! Everywhere I looked there was something new for me to discover and appreciate. I was captivated by the beauty and craftsmanship of these windows. 

But everything in order.

<p>The history of the Peleș Castle  traces back to 1866, when King Carol I of Romania (1839–1914) first visited the site of the future castle. It was love at first sight for the King, who fell in love with the magnificent mountain scenery. Determined to make the area his own, the King purchased 5 square kilometers (1.9 sq mi) of land near the Piatra Arsă River and named it the Royal Estate of Sinaia.

In 1873, the King commissioned the construction of a royal hunting preserve and summer retreat on the property and the foundation of Peleș Castle was laid on 22 August 1873. Several auxiliary buildings were built simultaneously with the castle including the guards' chambers, the Economat Building, the Foișor hunting lodge, the royal stables, and a power plant. Peleș Castle was the world's first castle to be fully powered by locally produced electricity. Oh! It also had a lift!

Throughout the years, the castle underwent extensive renovations and expansions, with new structures and decorative elements being added. By the 20th century, Peleș Castle had become a symbol of beauty, power, and grandeur, and a popular tourist destination. Today, the castle is one of Romania’s most iconic attractions, and is open to visitors who seek to explore the castle’s rich history and stunning architecture.</p>

<p>There were several architectural projects of the castle. The first three were copies of Western European palaces and were deemed too expensive and not original enough. The king was unimpressed with these ideas and searched for a more creative and interesting project. That is when Johann Schulz presented a more original concept that would combine Italian elegance with German neo-Renaissance aesthetics. It was a small palace, or rather a spacious Alpine-style mansion, that appealed to the king.

<p>Unfortunately, I took very few pictures of this wonderful building from the outside. There were two problems here. Firstly, a huge number of people did not allow us to break away from the tourist group so as not to get lost. And, secondly, my macro lens required me to move far enough to capture the entire building. On the other hand, there are enough pictures of this building on the Internet, which cannot be said about the interior.</p>
So construction of the castle began on August 22, 1873. As I've already said In addition to constructing the castle itself, there were other buildings associated with the castle that were also built including a guard house, a hunting lodge, royal stables, and a power plant. The power plant was the first of its kind in the world and provided the castle with electricity.</p>

<p>At the height of construction, there were three or four hundred people working on the castle at any given time. Perhaps from the point of view of the modern scale of construction, this is not so much, but for those times it was a huge crowd of people. By the way, we should not forget that they all had to receive three meals a day every day! Well... I'm not sure if it's three meals a day, but I hope they had labor protection there. Construction was paused for a time during the Romanian War of Independence in 1877-78, but after the war it picked up speed again and the castle was inaugurated with a ball on October 7, 1883. Ah, those old balls! I immediately imagine ladies in luxurious outfits and gallant gentlemen. For sure, in all this splendor, it looked amazing!

Since then, the castle of Peles has become a symbol of Romania. It stands as a reminder of Romania's history, culture, and artistry, and is admired by people from all around the world.</p>

<p>Entering the castle, the first thing that strikes us is the high front vestibule, which was originally designed as a patio, but in 1911 was fitted with a sliding roof to provide ventilation. The walls of the vestibule are finished with natural wood and decorated with two thousand figures depicting various biblical, mythological, and historical events. This grand vestibule is twelve meters high and is the highest room of the castle. I had to spend quite a lot of time to make a more or less acceptable shot, because tourists were constantly climbing the stairs.</p>

<p>Walking further into the castle, we find ourselves in the armory rooms and various military paraphernalia from around the world. Here, we find a unique and extensive collection of weapons from Europe and Asia, with more than four thousand items in all. This is a fascinating collection for anyone interested in military history, and there are even a few rare pieces from the 16th and 17th centuries on display. It is immediately clear what the owner of the castle was fond of! Although ... why be surprised? The times were restless. For example, with the outbreak of the war, I immediately realized the importance of having weapons in the house.</p>

<p>In addition to the armory, the castle also houses a library filled with an incredible selection of books from the Renaissance period, as well as a number of ancient manuscripts, some of which are centuries old. This is where I really got paralazed with admire! Old books have always had a hypnotizing effect on me. I can walk more or less calmely past antique furniture or jewelry, but not books!

The Library of Peles Castle is a majestic and awe-inspiring repository of two hundred years of knowledge, culture, and history. It is home to nearly 800 copies of books, though the royal family had a collection of a whopping 100,000 books stored in their permanent residence in Bucharest. Yes... it was an amazing time. Today, we are increasingly switching to e-books, but they will never replace the charm of a heavy paper volume, which is immediately associated with a fireplace, a rocking chair and a cozy evening visiting book heroes.

The library was equipped with a secret door that connected it directly to the King's chambers through a spiral staircase that led to the third floor. This allowed the King to access the library at any time. Not that it provides that he had access to the latest information and knowledge from around the world at any time of the day or night. Despite the high technical equipment of the castle for that time, there was no Internet there, but, damn it, how convenient it is, especially if you want to quietly escape from everyone. 

The library's collection contains a wide variety of books, ranging from works of literature to philosophy and science. Today, the Library of Peles Castle remains a place of beauty, knowledge, and history. It is a reminder of the past while still serving as a place where one can seek solace and learn.</p>

<p> The music room of Peles Castle is a beautiful and unique space, lovingly furnished with ornate teak furniture. This furniture was presented to the royal couple by an Indian Maharaja in the late 19th century, as a gesture of friendship and respect. For over a century, the same furniture has been lovingly maintained and cared for by generations of skilled craftsmen.

The teak furniture features intricate carvings of birds, flowers, and other motifs that show the level of skill and craftsmanship that the craftsmen possess. There is also an impressive collection of brass and bronze items, including candlesticks, clocks, and vases. Each piece of furniture is handmade, and for many years, the craftsmen would work on each piece for months to ensure that it was of the highest quality.

The furniture is a reminder of a bygone era, a time when craftsmanship and beauty were the most important things. It is a reminder that art and beauty are timeless, and that the beauty of the past can still be appreciated today.</p>

<p>From 1975 to 1990, Romania was ruled by the oppressive communist regime of Nicolae Ceausescu. During this time, the nation was deprived access of one its most iconic landmark, Peles Castle, which had been confiscated in favor of the state and closed to visitors. 

Ceausescu had his eyes set on the castle and was determined to make it his residence, but the caretakers of the castle were able to thwart his plans. Using their knowledge of the building, they convinced him that the walls of the castle were infected with a fungus that could prove harmful to the health of the dictator himself and his family. Ceausescu’s plans were thus abandoned and the castle remained closed until 1990 when the oppressive communist regime was finally overthrown.</p>

 <p>Since then, Peles Castle has been reopened to the public and functions as a museum. Thanks to the efforts of the caretakers, the palace has been restored to its former glory and is now a popular tourist destination. Visitors can explore the grand interior of the castle, which is filled with ornate furniture, paintings, and sculptures, as well as its beautiful grounds, which include a deer park, gardens, and several other attractions. </p>
