This story happened to me at a time when there was still a country called the Soviet Union, whose entire population was walking in the foot, watching the music program Blue Light on TV and waking up every morning from the fact that the radio commanded with a cheerful voice: "head straight , Feet shoulder width apart!"

After graduation, I went to the pioneer camp as a counselor. There I was given a group of nine-year-old children. I remember that I had a great desire to treat children the way I would like teachers to treat me.

The day of acquaintance has come. I gathered my players in a circle and asked everyone to go out in the middle and briefly talk about themselves. It was very interesting to watch the children. Some were verbose and good storytellers, while others were difficult to give speech and memories of the past. The most distinguished boy was from a distant America. He was an Indian. More precisely, his father was an American Indian, and his mother was Ukrainian. After the death of his father, they moved with his mother to live with his grandmother in the Ukrainian village. So this boy, besides "me to call Tecumsegg. I'm an Indian" did not utter a single word and again stood in a circle. Everyone looked at me.

"Well, well, Tecumseg, so Tecumseg. And what does this name mean?" - I asked. To which the answer was received, the "shooting star". From that moment all my attention was focused on a small Indian. In the dining room he was not in a hurry to start eating, like the rest of the children, but he examined everyone and only after making sure that everyone started to eat began to eat himself. He tried to be in the thick of things, but did not strive to stand out.

One day, we went for a short walk into the forest, where everyone was given the task to celebrate any manifestation of the life of forest dwellers. And again everyone gathered in a circle and I gave everyone the opportunity to tell what he saw. It's strange, but our former speakers this time did not stand out. But Tecumseg spoke the longest. He described in detail about the ant house and the routes of movement of its inhabitants surveyed by him, about their feeding and work to restore the part of the anthill destroyed by one of our children. After that, Tecumseg took a long pause in the story, and I already wanted to give the floor to the next child, when a little Indian began a story about a fox that looked out of its hole, looking out for strangers. "She was worried about her kids" - he concluded.

Next time several boys decided to find out the relationship with the American. Usually, teachers do not allow children to fight, but I was interested in the guy's reaction to the conflict. Watching through the dining room window and ready to intervene in the conflict, I noticed how four guys pressed Tecumseg to the wall. Without uttering a word, the Indian sharply attacked hitting the largest of the guys in the face. And again he took his position with his back to the wall. Everyone immediately forgot about American and rushed to help their big leader, crouched from pain to the ground. Standing so some time, Tecumseg went. Later girls from my group told me about the courage of four their classmates, who were attacked by the "red-skinned" boy. I have never heard complaints from Tecumseg himself.

At the end of the holidays, sports competitions between various groups were announced. I told my children about the kinds of competitions and criteria in accordance to which the winner will be determined. I must say that our group was hardly allowed to compete with the older groups. For each type of competition each group singled out its best participant, who scored points and thus determined the results.

Who will represent our group at the competitions, we decided with the children together. Most votes were for the Indian. I will not tell you in detail how strong and well Tecumseg was, he really was much ahead of everyone else. But the pedagogical council of the camp decided not to determine the winning group, but to declare that "friendship won". I flared in my manner, but I remembered the coolness of the Indian. The decision remained in force.

By the evening of the day when the results of the competition were due to be announced, Tecumseg came up to me and asked me to influence the revision of the result of the competition. After breakfast he informed me that he visited the senior camp educator. For dinner he no longer came. We went around the whole territory and only when the whole village next to which was the camp was found out about the loss of the boy, someone said that he saw a dark-skinned boy at the bus stop. He went home…

The camp management informed the police, I also had troubles, but internally I was glad of the determination and uncompromising nature of the guy. Tecumseg did everything first to win, then - to restore justice and in his incomplete 11 years left the territory of deception ...

Years have passed. Once I tried to find out information about the fate of a small Indian. His mother remarried and they left for Siberia. Then he entered the Leningrad Higher Artillery School, finished it with a gold medal and went to serve in Kazakhstan at the "strategic missile point". There he met his love - a local Uighur girl, which caused a great conflict with the headquarters of the special department of the KGB (Committee of state security in USSR). Two years later he hanged… So Tecumseg decided to leave the territory of deception definitively ... I have no doubt that before that he did everything that was in his power ...
